Our latest anniversary beer, starring an all-German cast of malt and hops, is yet one more glorious example of a Stone IPA brewed outside the box. Our brewers have brought their experiments with German hops to fruition, leaving convention behind to create this hefty IPA entirely with pilsner malts. These provide a superbly crisp mouthfeel, while a unique mix of noble and new-school hop varieties adds layers of bright, bitter flavors. Despite the daunting name, this beer isn’t designed to bring about the end of the world, but it just might destroy some of your preconceived notions of what an IPA can be.

Hops bill: Bitter-hopped with Magnum Late kettle additions: Herkules, Merkur and Opal Whirlpool: Emerald (aka Smaragd) and Strisselspalt from the Alsace region of France, which is just a stone’s throw across the Rhine from the German border. Dry-hopped with a 50/50 blend of German Hersbrucker and Sterling

Malt bill: Weyerman Pilsner Malt, Briess GoldPils Vienna

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 7/26/2013. Pours fairly crystal clear golden amber color with a 2 finger dense and fluffy white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of big tangerine, mango, orange zest, pineapple, lemon zest, floral, grass, pine, light caramel, and floral earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great complexity of tropical/citrus/earthy hop notes with a moderate malt balance; and good strength. Taste of big tangerine, mango, pineapple, orange zest, lemon zest, floral, grass, pine, light caramel, and herbal earthiness. Good amount of earthy pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of tangerine, mango, pineapple, citrus zest, floral, grass, pine, light caramel, and floral earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Awesome balance and complexity of tropical/citrus/earthy hop flavors; with a light-moderate malt balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a crisp, smooth, and moderately sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent DIPA! Great complexity and balance of citrus/tropical/earthy hops with a fair amount of malt balance; and very smooth and crisp to sip on for the ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Purchased at Foremost Liquors in Chicago, IL; enjoyed at a good buddy’s place during a Fantasy Football draft. Man, this stuff is pretty damn good. Appearance is a moderate gold with a thin white rim. Aroma of crisp German malt, moderate hop profile but also complex, nice and subdued. Taste goes down crisp and bitter, the finish is extremely dry for an IPA which is pretty great. This isn’t packed with a ton of different flavors, but it pulls off it’s minimalist flavors with great impact. Well done Stone, well done.

Pours clear golden orange with a decent frothy head. Aroma is butter, caramel, piney noble hops. Flavor has an initial buttery pineapple sweetness followed and balance nicely by bitter piney hops. Noble is showcased wonderfully in this one. Very drinkable, don’t notice the alcohol at all. Very nice.

Pours a golden color with a nice white head that leaves moderate lacing. Piney citrusy hoppy scent is intense. Flavors of a lot of hops that hits right up front. Citrusy afterflavor, hops really punch you in the mouth if you let it sit. Very nice mouthfeel for an IPA a little heavier than you expect but works well for this beer. Definitely a worthy beer from Stone and any hop head should seek this one out.

Light orange, dark yellow color. Decent puffy head with a ton of carbonation. A little hazy but generally clear. A rather beautifully hoppy aroma. A touch of bubblegum and a hint of cloves. Cotton candy maybe? It smells very "pink" for some reason. (No I have not been dropping acid.) The flavor is very VERY European: the malts are sharp and a little bitter, the hops are leafy and "dry," but it fits with the profile. The bubblegum kicks in on the aftertaste on the back of the tongue. Finishes very dry. This is a really interesting, challenging beer. It is a "cutter" that would be a great palate cleanser between hop-bombs.

22oz bottle. Hazy golden color. Thin white ring. Aroma of resiny hops, loads of sticky citrus. Hints of fresh orange. Sharp hops. Loads of bitter oils. Loads! Pale grains & hints of cotton candy. Mostly hops. Clean finish, some orange notes, fruit esters, oaky, and pine bite. (3817)

From tap. Very grassy hoppy nose and taste. Magnum hops come through mostly. Very dry bitter aftertaste. Grassy and grainy finish.

Poured into a snifter out of a 22oz bottle. Pours a nearly clear light gold with a smallish white head. Pretty decent head retention and lacing considerin the abv. Aroma of pineapple, tangerine, along with a whiff of alcohol. A little bit of fruit cake. Very nice and lets you know that this beer packs a punch. Lots of pineapple on the taste with orange cream and tangerine. The creamy/vanilla quality really is interesting and works very well. There is almost an orange dreamsicle quality about it. Bitterness is only moderate but the sweetness is thankfully held in check. Just a quick whiff of alcohol in the finish but this beer does not drink like it is 9.5% Overall, another home run from Stone. Excellent and unique flavor and really a pleasure to drink.

22oz bomber. Another great IPA from Mr. Steele! I love the German hop bill on this one because it exploits a unique sweetness that is often missed when crafting IPA’s. I really enjoyed this beer more as it aired out. The finish was very different compared to other high ABV IPA/DIPA’s in that it produced a malty sweetness that I found myself wanting more of. Well done Stone!
