3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Picked up at the COOP tonight for $5.99... shared tonight with the Tuesday night crowd... Mixed opinions, but I think Stone set out with a mission and accomplished it.
Pours very clear sorta dark golden... short lasting foamy white head with decent lacing.
Nose is really damn hoppy of course, but not for the timid... Don’t expect any "C" hops... this is about the heavy grassy and catty hops.
Flavor is aggressively bitter... astringent throughout... with warmth some heavy grassy/catty hoppiness comes out hard and leaves a bit of black pepper and even some apricot fruitiness... just enough pale maltiness to carry the hops/bitterness but just BARELY... finish is really dry and so astringent it is almost tannic... a lite peppery note hangs on for a while.
Medium body with a good carbonation...
Very interesting... I want another bottle right away... Drink this one fast, I suspect it is going to fall off fast.
Overall an interesting take on Continental hops, but the aromas and flavors IMO just don’t translate well on an "imperial" scale.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Draft at Dutch’s (also 22 oz bottle) from backlog notes. Pours a clear orange golden color with a medium sized off white head. The aroma and flavor have big Noble hop character; floral, herbal, grassy, pine with big pilsner malts, caramel, toasted bread, moderate bitterness, medium plus body, good carbonation, this is an interesting imperial pilsner ipa hybrid that was good enough to have more than once.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Poured into a snifter.
2.75 A: Lightly hazed light orange color. Just over one finger of frothy beige head. Retention is lacking and just a wisp or two of lacing is left. Weak for an IPA.
3.75 S: Hop forward and I would expect nothing less. Piney and floral with notes of tropical fruits including mango and papaya. Some earthiness and perhaps grassiness as well. Not much to say about the malts other than that they had to put some in. Neutral maltiness with a moderate sweetness.
3.5 T: Again the focus is hops. Moderate bitterness. Piney and earthy from start to finish. Floral in between. Mango and papaya are spotted here and there. Pretty straightforward taste. Not a lot of complexity and not a lot of maltiness other than the neutral sweetness that has to accompany a beer this big.
4.0 M: Medium to heavier medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Pleasantly creamy with a subtle lingering bitterness.
3.75 D: Good beer. No complaints. Fairly standard.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Raw beer. Strong aroma of citrus and floral and spiciness. Orange copper color that was not clear. White foamy head. Medium weight but coated the mouth and high carbonation. Strong harsh bitterness up front that continued but didn’t overwhelm. Good malt backbone with a slight sweetness. Big and bold.

22oz bottle -
Sweet. Why’d it have to be sweet. OK, so the lines subject is "snakes" in the movie quote, but it just wouldn’t do for this review. This beer is sweet, but it’s also hoppy to. A good dose of pine needles on the sniff, a touch spicy, alcohol, but also lots of fruity cocktail syrupyness. I get a lot of tropical fruity character like mango and pineapple on the flavor, some underlying vegetal bitterness like carrots or bell peppers combined with pine sap and wet leaves. Finish is long and enjoyable.

Transfer from BA review on 9-22-13-
Poured from bottle into a snifter
Appearance – The beer pours a hazy orange amber color with a small white fizzy head. The head fades fast leaving a persistent bubbly foam on the surface of the brew and a little bit of streaky lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is big of a grassy and grapefruit citrus hop as well as lots of sweeter fruit aromas. The sweeter fruit smells are a mix of orange and tropical fruits of tangerine, mango, and papaya. There is a lighter bready malt aroma there as well, but this is relatively light in comparison the fruit aromas, which overall dominate the smell and overall create a pleasant tropical fruit and lightly hopped aroma.
Taste – Unlike what would have been expected from the nose the taste begins with a rather malty taste of a cracker and bready flavor. A small amount of tangerine sweetness is present upfront, but not nearly as heavy as would have been expected from the nose. Upfront along with the lighter sweetness and malty taste is a moderate showing of a grapefruit and light grass hop taste. As the flavor advances the grapefruit gets more and more intense and bitter while the sweetness fades. At the same time a bit of pine comes to the tongue, all while the hop flavors get more resinous and bitter toward the end. In the end with the bittering of the hop and the lightening of the sweet a somewhat drier and rather biting bitter flavor is left to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the medium side in terms of thickness and creaminess for a brew of 9.5 % abv. with the carbonation level being on the rather average side. A slightly thicker body and lower carbonation may have been slightly more fitting, but overall it was alright.
Overall – A decent double IPA, but nothing all that fantastic. A little to bitter for bitter sake with not too much balance. A nice one to try, but not one I will likely go back to over and over again.
