We celebrated our first five years in business by releasing anniversary India pale ales, with each subsequent IPA brewed to be hoppier and more intense than the previous. For our 6th anniversary in 2002, we extended this concept by making an intensified version of Stone Smoked Porter. We cranked up the malts and hops a notch or three and conditioned it on French and American oak, which accentuated our porter’s distinctive smokiness and amplified its chocolate and roast coffee flavors while also adding subtle notes of toffee, cherries, dried berries and vanilla. We’re proud to give those who missed out—as well as those who didn’t—a fresh shot at experiencing this smoky, dark-as-night wonder.

Tap at Hair of the Dog, Bangkok. Poured a clear dark brown with a frothy off white head. The aroma is light smoke, roasty malt, light caramel. The flavour is moderate liqourice bitter with a big hop bitter, liqourice, light smooth alcohol, light dry coffee, spicy smoke palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Amazing.

An intensely hoppy dark malt beer, more black IPA than imperial porter but perhaps with some age the malt would come through more clearly. Still very good stuff.

The quintessential I imperial porter.so unbelievably smooth. No sign of alcohol. Yet rich.

Much like a Black IPA in some ways, this is very straightforward. Not a lot of complex malt character considering the style, but a well made beer, as expected from Stone.

22 Oz bottle from Spirits Jackson. Poured a medium to fuller density with a huge foamy beige head. Aroma is chocolatey, super old coffee with creamer, wet toast, hint of sugar. Flavor is better than the aroma loads of dusty chocolate, creamer, coffee, earthy, slight soy and cola.

This cool 22oz encore bomber pours with a deep mahogany colored body that supports a thin tan head of foam. The aroma offers up roasty malts, a bit of burnt malts, some molasses like sweetness and then a faint dark fruity ester sensation. The taste is nice and bold and integrated with roasty malts, burnt malts, chocolate malts, a woody spicy maltiness and then this gets sweetened up some by a malty slightly molasses like sweetness. This has firm malt roastiness and then toward the finish picks up slivers of sweet dark fruity esters to add just that little extra something. A few more sips and it feels like there’s a faint sense of smokiness going on as well. Solid robust porter. So glad it was brewed again.
