3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
(22 oz. bottle from <A HREF=http://www.ratebeer.com/Place/massachusetts/w target=blank>Julio’s Liquors, cellared for 9 mos. after purchase) A hoppy one for sure...Pours cloudy medium-dark amber with a firm one finger of lightly amberish biege head. Very good-looking beer when poured. Nose is caramel and vanilla, as well as pine and grapefruit rind. Mouthfeel smooth and soft, a little bit of heft. Heavy, foamy rings of lacing. Flavor is pretty much about the hops, quite bitter up front and on through finish. A good solid dose of pine and grapefruit over a lighter dose of vanilla and caramel maltiness. A little too heavy on the hops for me but nose, palate and appearance all very nice.

A friendly 22 oz. brown bottle from Albertson’s joined me for this rating. ABA (which I nickname ODB) is my go-to for a bargain top level ale. Great presence, just the right head for nice lacing on my tall glass stein. Really a nice nutty opening taste, lingers for awhile. Pine, perhaps a hint of chocolate. ABA does not slam you with a flavor jolt, just really tasty. At 7.2% ABA is elevated but does not kick your rear end. Probably my favorite right now next to some Belgians. Oh yeah.

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Deep ruby color with a tan head. Strong aroma of malts, caramel, pine and hops. Complex taste of malts, oak, dried dark fruit, lacks the touch of hops, though. Full oily body, medium carbonation, medium to long finish, definitely dry, heavy bitterness. A strong ale indeed.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Looks great dark bronze with bubbily tan head. Strong atoma of noble hops and caramel malts. Strong bitter flavor like a pils on steroids. Heavy brew but mostly just the dry hearty bitterness and not much else. I prefer the barrel aged versions which are more complex and woody. Long dry bitter palate. A San Marcos classic for sure, but after all these years I discovered this kind of deep pine hxc bitterness (not sure what type of hops it is) isn’t really my fav, but still a nice bold beer.

Pours a deep amber with a modest creamy head. Malty aroma with caramel, citrus and pine needles. Full body, oily feel, average carbonation. Taste kicks off with lots of bitterness from grapefruit, coffee, roasted malt and some marzipan. Loooong and hoppy finish.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Deep ruby red color. Medium carbonation. Malt dominated aroma with some caramel, light chocolate, and some piney hop smells. Nice balance of flavor. Deep and malty, chocolatey, with some sharp citrus hop notes to cut through. Good beer.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Aroma; brown malts, milky hops (?), fermented milk chocolate or something, dough - hmm, very special. Look; brown, beige resistant head. Taste; hops, roasted malts, dark caramel, black chocolate, solid portion bitter fruits - leading to a solid hoppy finish with black bitter chocolate. Feel; ok, solid, straight to it. Overall; yes, it’s a strong ale. [50cl.can 7.2% BB.06MAR17, brewed in D, Stone Brewing Berlin &german barcode]

heavy cloying sweetness, very bitter, full body, This was just a quick grab for me at the store and I guess I’m really not worthy. For me, It’s like a shot of expensive liquor: you can tell it’s really good but it wasn’t enjoyable. lol The aftertaste was great though!

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
This is an epic brew. Outstanding malty bitterness with a superb dominating aroma. A solid head and an excellent mouthfeel. Like almost an IPA with a serious maltiness to it, hmm, maybe more the ale than the IPA, hard to quite work out which dominates. Excellent
