COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is an aggressive beer. You probably won’t like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to appreciate an ale of this quality and depth.

This has long been my favorite ale. As a huge fan of hoppy bears and this being the king of hoppy ales it’s hard to do much better. Years ago I used to arrogantly stick to only European (primarily Belgium ales) but this was one of the beers that changed my tune and thankfully so as the proliferation of shockingly thrillingly hoppy beers coming out of smaller U.S. brewers has been incredible the past decade. Tonight I’m comparing it to another ale and it may have finally met it’s match... the double bastard.

Bottle to shaker glass. Pours clear deep amber/red, quick one finger off white hear. Nice lacing and retention. Aroma of smoked malt and pine. Taste is slightly sweet caramel but predominately bitter. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, resin oil mouth feel. Finishes long and bitter. Tasting notes of pine, apricot, smoked malts, caramel, burnt sugar and coffee. A very complex beer worthy of it’s reputation as a bitter strong ale.

Not something i would have bought my self so was glad to review the bastard box set for the holidays. Not one who enjoys overly hoppy beers. This beer is full of aggressive hops. The level of malt in it keeps this beer tolerable for me while still focusing heavily on the hops. I can understand why these beers appeal to craft beer drinkers who like hops. Just not my thing.

Poured reddish brown with a frothy tan head. Aroma of sweet fruit and caramel malt. Medium body, flavour is medium sweet, increasingly bitter.

UPDATED: MAR 28, 2015 Bottle from Haskells. Consumed in Moeder Lambic glass. Forgot how dark this one pours. Copper/amber. Minimal head. Aroma has some sweet elements but pine/citrus/hops come on strong. Gives way to a blast of hops that grabs you by the taste buds and never lets go. Basically a hop filled ride with resiny aftertaste. It definitely owns its hop commitment. Mouthfeel is cloying. You don’t want to drink this before other beers. It doesn’t play well in the sandbox.

Bottle from Haskells with commonmac. Dark mahogany with small head. Smells hoppy. Very drying, powerful hop taste . Strong hop dominates but finish is nice. Tiny bit of roasted malt but not as much as expected. Maybe some subtle syrupy elements. Could definitely tell this was a stone beer. Powerful and arrogant for sure.

Keg at Brewdog Manchester. A clear deep ruby amber colour with a fizzy tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, dark fruits like red grape and plum, nuts, sweet caramel and some spice. Taste of dark fruits, caramel, sugar, roasted malt, some grapefruit, earthy bitterness and alcohol. Full bodied, soft carbonation and an oily texture. A bittersweet, fruit hop finish. A well balanced, flavourful beer. Similar to a hoppy barley wine. Nice but lacks that special something.

A clear dark amber color with medium amount of cream colored head. A strongly hoppy aroma. A pleasant hoppy taste and a lingering hoppy aftertaste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Ruby walnut color with a medium sized creamy beige head. Aroma of creamy malt, molasses and sharp, piney hops. Full bodied with dark fruit sweetness and loads of resiny hops. Finishes with a dry creamy malt backbone. This is a strong one and the bitterness is a bit over the top but it’s good.

ENG: 650ml bottle brought from Vancouver, poured into the tulip. Opalescent dark amber color, nice thick but dissipating, beige head. Aromas of hops, a bit tropical fruits, grapefruit, pine and brandy. Also a bit skunky and alcoholic. Tastes malty, hoppy, with hints of roasted caramel. Finishes heavy, smoky tart. A bit too styptic bitter aftertaste. Medium carbonation, medium to full body. Overall quite heavy flavors, too smoky / roasty with huge remaining tartiness.

PL: Butelka 650ml przywieziona z jednego ze sklepów w Vancouver, przelana do kieliszka. Opalizująca, ciemno bursztynowa barwa, gęsta lecz opadająca, beżowa piana. Aromaty chmielowe, nieco owoców tropikalnych, grejfrut, sosna, brandy. Także nieco skunksa i alkoholu. W smaku słody, chmiel, z nutami palonego karmelu. Pod koniec ciężkie, wędzone i cierpkie. W posmaku nieco zbyt ściągająca goryczka. Średnie nasycenie, średnie do pełnego odczucie w ustach. Podsumowując dość ciężkie piwo, jak dla mnie zbyt palone / wędzone z ogromną cierpkością pozostającą długo na języku.
