3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
2011 bottle, of course, from Binny’s, $6.99, not that it matters now. Think I’ll pop this sooner than later, as anise is not one of my friends, just like pineapple and cilantro. Got a nice, small goblet for Kentucky BBA Ale, so that should be good glassware. Cap came off a bit too easily, with a slight psst. Doesn’t seem to be oxidation in the headspace, though. Pours a brownish-black, with fizzy brown foam. Smell, at least, is not overpowering as other reviewers have said. Kind of a sweet nose, with licorice candy to it, and a bit of stout roastiness. Taste does have a bit of oxidation, giving a sherry note. Nice mellow malt taste, fizzy as a coffee soda. Licorice taste remains in support. Alcohol does not seem too strong, I just know I’ll feel it much later. So it doesn’t have the coffee, roast and alcohol blast of a Dark Lord, perhaps I should try to say what the Belgian yeast adds to the mix, but it just seems like its own little beer, to be enjoyed now and then nevermore.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
22oz bottle. Pours a deep black color with a thin khaki head. The anise overpowers the aroma, and the oak sneaks in with hints of cocoa and roasted malt in the back. Taste begins with roasted malts and black coffee, underlined with a bittersweet dark chocolate and a touch of dark fruits. This is followed by a big kick of anise through to the finish. Some of the oak appears midway. Medium to full body with a soft, medium to low carbonation.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
[6549-20140723] Bottle. Crumbly cheesy grains and toasted marshmallow brûlée flavour. Black body with a quick foamy light tan head. Light anise-infused coffee hinted grains flavour. Full body. Interesting but the Belgo makes it strange-o. (7/3/7-/3/13) 3.3

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Deep black in colour with a thin but lingering beige head, light lacing.
Aroma is of coffee, liquorice, roasted malt, light sweetness.
Flavour is heavy on the liquorice, roasty, creamy and quite sweet, light coffee, some bitterness and some alcohol.
Creamy mouthfeel, medium body, moderate carbonation.
Finishes long, bitter, warming with lots of liquorice.
It’s good. I like the direction that the anise takes this beer. Gives it a nice big body.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
"i am surprised to like this as much as i do (based on two shared bottles). haven’t had it head to head with the classic yet (which is one of my all time faves) but this is deeelicious. aroma is the strong point. the licorice like anaise, chocolate and roasted malt is great. subtle oak also comes through in the feel and flavor. i for one am glad they did two versions of this and OG. neither was better than the original imo, but both were very very good!"
