Tap at Bar on Buena. Caramel-colored rocky head is delicious-looking. Not sure Im in love with the anise initially as it gives the beer a medicinal feel. The anise in the finish is very nice, though, if youre into that sort of thing (which I am): rootsy, it reminds me of an Amaro liqueur that I picked up on a distillery tour in the Veneto just north of Venice (a liqueur I bought extra bottles of to bring home). I.e., it reminds me of dopeness. A smooth chocolate and slightly burnt caramel soothes the Amaro finish, swaddling it in softly sweet blankets. Definitely a beer you want to keep somewhat cold; as it warms, the anise in the beginning is kind of sickly before it settles into the rootsy finish. The smell approximates that initial flavor. The finish (and the anise in the beginning) make or break the beer -- you either like it or you dont. Im half and half, but the finish, luckily (and by definition, I guess), is the last impression.

Old rating, dark black pour, khaki foam. Rich chocolate and roasty malts dominate, but licoricy anise and Belgian spices are definitely present. Sweet and spicy and boozy. Big beer, but fun.

22oz bottle. Pours a deep black color with a thin khaki head. The anise overpowers the aroma, and the oak sneaks in with hints of cocoa and roasted malt in the back. Taste begins with roasted malts and black coffee, underlined with a bittersweet dark chocolate and a touch of dark fruits. This is followed by a big kick of anise through to the finish. Some of the oak appears midway. Medium to full body with a soft, medium to low carbonation.

Choklad russin svagt av koriander. Bygger nog bakfylla fint. Citrus och anis (suprise). Fyller munnen med smak och nosen med arom. Skulle sparat ett r till.

[6549-20140723] Bottle. Crumbly cheesy grains and toasted marshmallow brle flavour. Black body with a quick foamy light tan head. Light anise-infused coffee hinted grains flavour. Full body. Interesting but the Belgo makes it strange-o. (7/3/7-/3/13) 3.3

Keg at Stone Liberty Station, 13/11/14. Black with a decent tan swirl and edgeing. Nose is rich roast, aniseed well evident, spice, chocolate, toffee. Taste comprises mellow dark fruits, spice, aniseed, light yeast notes, dark malts, chocolate. Medium + body, fine carbonation, semi drying close tempered with sweet and sour notes. Decent enough impy but a fair way from top draw.

Deep black in colour with a thin but lingering beige head, light lacing. Aroma is of coffee, liquorice, roasted malt, light sweetness. Flavour is heavy on the liquorice, roasty, creamy and quite sweet, light coffee, some bitterness and some alcohol. Creamy mouthfeel, medium body, moderate carbonation. Finishes long, bitter, warming with lots of liquorice. Its good. I like the direction that the anise takes this beer. Gives it a nice big body.

Black, with a nice frothy brown head. Smells like coffee, caramel, and licorice. Taste is heavy on the coffee, dark chocolate and caramel, with the anise being kind of a subtle background player. Light fuit flavors as it warms. 2010 vintage, drank on 10/17/2014
