When it came time to brew Bottleworks 13th anniversary beer, we turned to Stone to brew this behemoth. "The Matts" traveled down to San Diego in December to help create this 13-hop, 13-grain monument to our 13 years of selling great craft beer!

A very fruity American Strong Ale. Poured quite dark, a beautiful pour with just the right amount of head that dissolved slowly. Pine notes, grapefruit. Tons of malt and mega hops. A bit saucy, the taste has a instant strong impact yet the after taste was pretty smooth. Maybe not as full bodied as I expected from 13 hops / grains. But quite delicious, strong and not really OTT. A job well done!

Bottle from South Bay Liquor: Created a violent growth of thick shaving cream like head while a dense brown liquid poured into my pint glass cup. Aroma is thick and structured with a sturdy backing of rich sugary caramel or malt syrup. The flavor is rich and robust with a velvety smooth palate of sweet caramelized malts that completely dominate this drink but there is just the right amount of hop balancing. Sort of reminds me of drinking a double arrogant bastard that has been oak aged except I donít taste any wood and I mean this not in a good way.

As the name implies, thereís a lot going on here... perhaps too much. The aroma is chock full of resinous pine tar notes. On the palate, itís clear that there are a ton of malts, but they cannot cut through the hops in the nose. The malt backbone attempts to balance out the intense bitterness of the hops and the significant alcohol burn, but doesnít quite make it. Itís intense and enjoyable, but not technically great.

Bottle. Pour is dark brown, tan head, good retention/some lace. Aroma is pine, resin, roast, dark chocolate, coffee. Taste is sweet, very bitter, pine/floral/resinous hops, roast, molasses. Palate is thick, sticky, bitter/sweet finish. What a mess.

Bottle. Poured black with a tan head that settled to a ring and left light lace. Aroma of milk chocolate. The flavor found chocolate with a nice roasted malt backing. Medium body, sweet, and a cocoa aftertaste.

Shared by drabmuh. Thanks Matt. The beer is dark chestnut colored with a tan head. The aroma offers pine, hops, caramel, booze, malt, maple. The flavor is a balance of piney hops and rich, sweet, caramels and malt, with a nod toward the malty side. Double digit abv is masked pretty well for the most part. Medium bodied with appropriate carbonation. A bit syrupy, coating the palate. Lingering flavors of caramel. Overall, this was pretty tasty. I would have it again. Tasted on 12/17/12 from a capped 650mL bomber bottle. Pours dark cola brown with an average tan head that slowly recedes to average lace, leaving some lacing along the inside of the glass. The nose is full of dark molasses and roasted coffee beans with dark chocolate, toasted cocoa nibs, a touch of vanilla, and some resinous hops. The flavor is much the same, with plenty of coffee and dark chocolate malt, with a ton of bitter resin hops, and just a touch of sweeter molasses and vanilla. The body is full and sticky with average carbonation and a long bitter coffee, resin hops, and lightly sweet molasses and vanilla finish.

This was truly an awful beer and I donít say that often. It actually tasted offensive. Dark black color, short head. Smells a little odd, like plastic and malts. The taste was downright awful, burnt rubber, tires, gas station, malts and a hint of pine. I was really disappointed in this beer, one of the worst beers Iíve had and probably the only bad Stone beer Iíve had. Disgusting. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 04-29-2012 00:36:48

Bottle 650 ml
Aroma not overly bold yet with plenty of hops. Different notes, caramel, chocolate , some alcohol, touch of smoke. Woody notes, some spice. 7+
Appearance dark brown, fine haze with tanned creamy cap. Good lace shown. 4+
Flavor and Palate : Every sip was different. Touch of smoke, wood, chocolate , dry alcohol, plum, chewy body. Great to see all of that blended with good harmony.

Pours very dark, looks like a porter, with rust highlights. Thereís very little head, and a strong aroma I could pick up on before I lifted the glass. Lots of malt, some caramel, ginger, and strong anise. All of that comes through in the flavor, plus heavy, roasted malt, coffee, almonds, chocolate, and a big kick from the hops. Thereís plenty of heat from the 11% ABV, which is nice if you want something thatís gonna get a little rough with you. This is a damn fine beer.
