3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Beer pours dark brown with a retained tan colored head. Aroma is very malty with a little coffee, some figs and alcohol. A little earth too. Flavor is sweet and the finish is dry. Another great beer from Stone. They really do a great job with strong ales, IMO!

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle into a snifter.
Caramel becomes a dark chocolate brown in the glass, obscurant. Half a finger of sandy tan head fades to a silky ring quickly.
The aroma is constantly shifting; I pick up something different upon each pass. This time, coffee beans, milk chocolate and toast; next time, vanilla and red grapes.
Much sweeter here, with raisins and figs up front. A dash of cinnamon is met with sweet caramel, toasted bread, bread pudding, tobacco. Reminds of a sweet hookah. Lingering coffee and dark chocolate.
Hefty medium full body, made thick with malt sugars. Alcohol sure is noticeable at 11 percent, numbing the tongue and flowing through the nose a bit. Heartburn as well. Moderate carbonation pinches the tongue but holds together well as it moves.
Maybe a bit different a year after bottling, but interesting. Lots of malt complexity. Heavy, hard to have more than a glass.

Bottle from Bottleworks, Seattle
Dark color, almost black, with small compact head. Aroma of cocoa and dark malt. Good body structure; nice malty flavor, on the dark side obviously, with chocolate; moderately sweet; but the presence of liquorice brings to mind the oxidization and spoils a bit the experience. Strong but balanced bitterness.
Very good beer as usual.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle from Amfo. Pours deep dark brown. Nose is dark fruits, peat, earth, and molasses. Tastes of pine, plums, molasses, peat, mushrooms, chocolate, resin, and all sorts of things that you may find in a basement. A lot going on but pleasant. Alcohol is there and this is nice for a cold evening glad I drank before spring.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Deep brown body with almost no light getting through at all, with a two centimetre tall rich chocolatey brown head. Aroma of smoked peat, oats, nuts, oak, alcohol, pit fruits, milk chocolate and even some wormwood. Full-bodied; Dense rich malty mouthful with a pungent brandy, cognac and alcohol burn at first then fading to a subdued smoked peat note, a little mushrooms and a hint of spices, but mostly malt. Aftertaste shows some sweetness, a little bit of pit fruits and caramel and a lot more malt with alcohol. Overall, a nice and refined beer that is more complex than I initially thought, and finally showing a Stone beer worthy of a good score! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from New Beer Distributors in New York, New York on 04-June-2012 for US$7.25 sampled at home in Washington on the opening night of the Sochi Olympics in Russia for Rating #4400 on 07-February-2014.

2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle - Vintage 2012 - Chocolate and nutty notes with a ton of booze. Almost like a liquor chocolate. Jet brown with a brown head. Malty syrup, chocolate and booze. I was hoping for so much more but this is a bit of a mess of flavors and not very good.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Now close to a year and a half old, let’s see what it turned into.
Pours black with a three finger tan head (aggressive pour). Good lacing, thick but not as dark as an imperial stout.
Smell juicy, roasty, sweet. Very hard to pin down, combination of American Strong Ale, Barleywine, and Imperial Stout. Roast and nut, red fruit.
Taste is roasty toffee, burnt sugar, caramel, fruit. Pretty sweet.
Very full bodied.
Less of a clusterfuck then when it was fresh, but still think there’s a lot going on, not sure if I’m a fan.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Dark brown pour with small beige head. Aroma of malts, toffee, fruits and hops. Taste of roasted malts, toffee, dark heavy chocolate, hint of vanilla and tons of hops but not bitter at all, sweetness probably masking the bitter finish. Lower carbonation, full bodied and creamy mouthfeel. Good beer.
