Tap at RNH. Deep black pour with an intensely bourbony nose. Rich bourbon flavour and even a bit of peppery heat. Quite boozy actually. Dry cocoa and a lot of roast on the finish. Chewy palate - more bourbon than beer, but I kind of like that. A little bit of milk-chocolate vs the dry cocoa of the original beer. Chewy and a bit of lingering bourbon.

On tap at Brouwer’s Cafe, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, caramel malts, dark fruits and bourbon. Flavour of dark fruits, molasses, wood, nuts and bourbon. Wonderful.

On tap at Rattle N Hum during their Stone event. Pours a deep black with a thin dark tan head. Sweet vanilla, bourbon, wood, chocolate. Lots of sweet bourbon and vanilla. Chewy roast. Faint cocoa, but overpowered by the delicious bourbon.

Draft. Pours near black with a tan head. Bourbony and roasty aroma with some light sweetness. The flavor has a light bourbon sweetness, roasted malts, dark chocolate, and some medium bitterness. Really good.

Yet another fantastic offering from Stone (this is why they are my favorite!). Takes a very very nice base beer and accentuates the bitter chocolate with a sweet vanilla bourbon presence that raises the abv but smooths out the beer. Wish I could get a bottle :("

UPDATED: MAY 11, 2009 Draft at Brouwer’s. Jet black. Loose caramelly burnt-tan ring. Big bourbon and maply nose. That combination gives it a sourness that’s almost salty. Big, thick, creamy body. Roasty, tons of char, some maple syrup, burnt toast, and sharp dark-roasted coffee beans, along with a bit of bourbon and vanilla. Nice, but still young and raw.

In short: A roasted chocolaty stout with a touch of vanilla and a touch of bourbon
How: Tap at Boston Extreme Beer Fest 2009
The look: Black body topped by a large tan head
In long: Roasted malts, black chocolate and a touch of vanilla. I’ve had many bottles of the regular 12th Anniversary Bitter Chocolate so I basically only took comparative notes. Compared to the regular batch this Bourbon Barrel batch felt a little less roasted, there was an added vanilla touch, the body felt smoother, it was a little less bitter and of course there was a notes of bourbon (although not much). I don’t think it spent a lot of time in the bourbon barrels because this was not a major change over the original 12th Anniversary. It’s hard to say which of the regular 12th Anniversary or the bourbon barrel I preferred but it is even harder to say bendroflumethiazide.

UPDATED: OCT 7, 2010 Draft during the 40 tap Stone Event @ Rattle n Hum with Andrew, Big Tony, PJ, and Brendan. Pours pitch black with brown chocolate lacing. Aroma is delicious bourbon, oak, sweet chocolate, roast, vanilla. Mouthfeel is smooth with the same notes. This brew reminded me somewhat of LA Angel Share.
