Tap at Hops and Pie. Very, very oaky without any of the characteristic vanilla and balance I would expect. Not something I would seek out at all.

A little caramel, a little bourbon. Bourbon doesn’t add anything to this beer. Better without the bourbon. Pours maroon. Tap at Snallygaster.

On draught at Belmont Station. Ruby amber color. Aroma is pine, light citrus, and some bourbon. Taste is pine, oak, bourbon, tart citrus, and caramel. The aging does some great smoothing out of a fairly aggressive beer.

From notes. First reviewed 8/22/2011. On tap at the Stone Tap Takeover at Acre. Served in a snifter. My snifter is full of a recognizable cherry mahogany beer with a nice beige cap. Webs of lace stick to the lace and the head retains well, like the normal Bastard. The aroma is full of caramel malt, with grapefruit and other assorted citrus smelling hops, pine needles, and just a touch of oak and bourbon. The taste starts out sweet. Caramelized grapefruit impart a sweet and hoppy flavor right away. A bit of brown sugar, prickly pine, some oak, and bourbon toward the end lead into a bitter finish. The pine hops and bourbon combine to give off a fusel bitter flavor that is not very good and lingers through the finish. The body is slightly above medium, with mostly creamy smooth carbonation. A little bit sticky up front and after each sip, with an alcohol inspired dryness in the middle. This is the second Stone beer I like a little bit less after aging it in bourbon barrels. The residual pine hop presence doesn’t work well with the bourbon for me.
