2005. Nice big vanilla-y oak aroma comes on strong. Still a good amount of hops in this, but they have been rounded off beautifully by time and the oaky vanilla barrel influence.

Tap 2004 ed. at Alewife Baltimore for Stone Total Tap Takeover. Poured a hazy, deep amber with a not much head and little lace. Amazing bourbon nose comes through with toasted coconut, vanilla, baked peaches. Taste is outstanding: fireside cordial qualities bring sweet booziness, warming spicy alcohol, subtle bourbon, vanilla, chewy caramel and toffee. All around outstanding. Body is soft, powerful, lovely.

On tap at Rattle N Hum. Gold with some cloudiness and creamy off-white head. Has a sweet aroma with some dark fruit, grapes, and a hint of vanilla/alcohol. Fairly sweet and full bodied with a light bitterness, and a bite from the alcohol.

2004 edition on tap at alewife for the stone total tap takeover. pours a hazy, orange-copper with hints of gold and a thick, creamy, off-white head. aroma is wonderful with massive vanilla, oak, and coconut with hints of orange creamsickles, lemon citrus, and big notes of toffee. flavor was absolutely fantastic with tons of vanilla, oak, and toasted coconut with fruity notes of oranges, peaches, and lemons backed by grassy hops and light pine esters. palate is full bodied, smooth as silk, with a hint of sticky sweetness and light warmth on the swallow. overall, an amazing bourbon barrel barleywine.

@ Alewife for Stone Tap Takeover Tour 2010. This was the 2004 bourbon barrel aged version. This had vanilla notes and sweet malty flavors on the nose. The appearance is slightly cloudy and deep reddish gold. Taste is sweet, but not too much. Flavors of vanilla, alcohol, and malty notes all coming through. The toffee flavors linger and really make this beer shine. ABV is high, but really goes well with this beer. Palate is thick and mildly carbonated. Overall a really nicely aged and matured barleywine. The best barleywine I have had ever.

On tap @ Avenue Pub in New Orleans. Pours a light brick red with an extremely thin head. Aroma is very sweet. Flavor is not as sweet as I had expected, plenty of hops bitterness. This is extremely smooth and drinkable fo ra barley wine...very good.

I love Stone brews. Stone IPA is one of the greatest beers available and likewise all beers I’ve tried from them have been way above par. For some reason, this beer disappointed me. I love barely wines (Bigfoot 2004 and Old Numbskull I would recommend) but this one was difficult to drink. It had no specific flavor. Perhaps my expectations were too high. They all can’t be winners.
