Bottle (Vintage 2010) at The Others Tasting, London - another good one from Bruce. Pours lightly foggy amber with a frothy, tan head. Dry, ripe fruits on the nose, light earth. Medium to big sweet flavor with lightly toasted wood, bitter earth, toasty bread and rindy citrus. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly warming finish with more earthy bitterness, ripe semi-dark fruits, alcohol, wood, some dried toffee. Rich and not overly sweet. Nice.

2010 Bottle @ THE Others Tasting. Massive thanks to deeblo for tracking this down! The pour’s a deep reddish brown color with a small off-white head. The nose is sprucy hops, general woodland. Red apples, caramel and hints of nutmeg. The taste is moderately hoppy. Distinctly woody edge. Hints of vanilla and caramel candy. Hot finish. Full body, fine carbonation. Aggressive mouthfeel. This is a real sipper indeed. Overall, a pretty good beer. It still drinks hot, so I’d actually recommend letting this age a bit.

Scopey (6932) - Croydon, Greater London, ENGLAND - JAN 27, 2013
2010 bottle thanks to Bruce at THE others tasting. It pours deep amber with a medium yellow-white head. The nose is wood, varnish, nectarine, citrus peel, brown bread, gingerbread, spice, raisin, honey and caramel. The taste is wood, varnish, leather, bourbon, decent bitterness, dark fruit, alcohol warmth, bitter citrus and fruit cake with a bitter finish. Medium-full body and moderate, prickly carbonation. Perhaps a bit more age would smooth this out a bit more, but it is pretty damn tasty. As usual Stone does not disappoint!

Bottle. Hazy rrd/ruby liquid with medium off - white head. Aroma of sweet toffee, pine, wood, bourbon, biscuit, coconut and caramel. Taste is light sweet and medium bitter with notes of pine, wood/oak and toffee. Medium bodied with low to medium carbonation. Nice but a bit dilly.

2010 500ml bottle from the book release. Pours with a clear chestnut brown hued body with an exceedingly large tan head. Aromas are a bit hoppy, dark fruits, marmalade, tangerine, wood, dark brown sugar and mild bourbon and barrel. Flavors are hoppy, tangerine, bourbon, brown sugar, molasses, medium bitter, oxidized hop character, hot. Not a lot of barrel. Medium carbonation, fuller bodied and warming.

500 ml bottle to snifter (shared with the wife during an unexpected stop in Lafayette, IN in the middle of a blizzard; thanks deftim13). Looks good; a hazy amber with fluffy light beige head. Smells and tastes good too; sweet and boozy with a nice, creamy mouthfeel. Great stuff.

Bottle shared by drabmuh at a Stone tasting a while back. Thanks Matt. The beer is amber and mostly clear with a small white head that leaves sparse lacing on the glass. The aroma offers oak, malt, booze, caramel. The flavor follows suit. A bit sweet, as is customary of the other Stone barleywines I have had. Some nice notes of oak and bourbon linger. Medium bodied with adequate carbonation. I enjoyed this and would have it again. Best in small doses. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 05-08-2012

I think that this is the American BW that all others should be compared to. While not excellent, I think it represents the style perfectly.

Bottle, purchased st the brewery and shared with Parksy and Gripp. Tawny body, hazy, thick gold-tinted crown. Toffee and bourbon nose, warm alcohol vapors, soft vanilla, oak. Sweet malty body, with an assertive bourbon character that doesn’t dominate or detract from the base beer. The body is a litle less chewy than the regular OGBW, and the finishes a little hotter, but all of the pleasing character of the base beer shines nicely. Loved it.
