Pours black into an English pint. Mocha head with excellent retention recedes leaving spider lacing to coat surface. Sweet smoked resin aromas. Dry with sweet caramel and smoked jalapeño upfront turning to chocolate in the lasting finish.

From notes. First reviewed 8/8/2011. Served on tap at Three Floyds in a snifter.
Stone Bourbon Barrel Smoked Porter is nearly pitch black with molasses colored edges. A creamy tan head rests on top and leaves some light lace.
The sweet bourbon aroma balances out the smoke in the base beer so perfectly. The result is a smooth aroma of bourbon, oak, smoke, roasted malt, and coffee.
Each sip starts sweet with a tinge of bourbon and some light molasses. Some oak and smoke step in to impart a woody favor. Coffee and fully roasted malt lead into the finish, which has another flourish of bourbon.
This has a fuller than medium body that works well with the base beer and is not too light for the bourbon barrel aging. Smooth, creamy carbonation is just crisp enough to refresh the palate between sips.
Smoked beers are a tough balancing act for me. I enjoy them to a certain extent, but any time they taste like I am licking an ashtray, I am immediately turned off and want nothing to do with it. The Stone Smoked Porter is intense and starts to wander toward that line, but putting it into barrels for a while does wonders to the flavor.

On draft at World of Beer. This one pours a deep, dark mahogany color and nearly black and topped by a small head of tan colored foam that recedes quickly to a thin film and leaves sticky splotches of lace around the glass. The aroma shows notes of dark chocolate, light smoke, some mocha roast, and smooth oaky bourbon atop a toasted caramel malt base. The bourbon certainly doesn’t overpower, which is nice and just adds more character and depth to the base beer. The flavor follows suit with the dark chocolate, roast, and touch of smoke upfront with the smooth, sweet oaky bourbon and vanilla following to smooth things out and give more depth. The roast and dark chocolate add the right amount of bitterness to balance all the flavors. The bourbon barrel blends in nicely with the base beer here instead of overpowering like a lot of barrel aged beers do. I would like to see more smoke, but shows the same amount as the base beer does. Medium bodied and smooth on the palate with balanced carbonation that leads to a choco bourbon finish. Easy drinking porter and very tasty at that. Nothing mind blowing, but certainly a solid beer and a nice addition to a solid base beer.

Clean smoke and wood. Lots of deep rich cocoa and coffee notes. Great malt character all around and the bb just takes the whole beer up a notch.

Draft. Poured a dark brown color with an aqverage frothy light brown head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate toasted malt, chocolate and sweet bourbon aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium toasted chocolate and sweet bourbon flavor with a medium bourbon sweet malt finish of moderate duration. My expectations where not met.

On tap at WOB. Pours black with a thick creamy tan head. Huge bourbon and light smoke aroma. Smoke, bourbon and chocolate all popping through in the taste. Well balanced brew that doesn’t let the bourbon overpower the base beer.

Wonderful base porter. The stone smoked porter is one of my favorites. Found it aged in bourbon barrels on tap at a local watering hole. The barrel really comes through and blends a great porter with a nice bourbon barrel aftertaste.
