3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
October 25th, 2013 - The Burton Snatch is unique, and to San Diego, foreign. There’s a particular hops character here, and I can see it being quite unwelcome in a part of the country addicted to citrus, stinging hops. The smell reminds me a lot of Lay’s potato chips - lightly greasy and salty, with an added layer of caramelization, like a banana flambé. The flavor is slightly sweet, with notes of corn bread with a honeyed glaze, and a lighter palate: unique and good. Going against the grain here, but this is a refreshing change of pace from the typical hop cone to the eye.

Perhaps the worst Stone beer ever. Smells nasty and dirty. Pale golden color with strong white head. An earthy, light IPA...really just not good tasting?

"Herbal and earthy, yes...also with a little bit of pee character in there. Not necessarily a bad thing, just saying. Not a big fgan of English IPAs, but this is hoppy enough to be pretty nice."

2.4 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
On my third and last flight of the afternoon at The Liberty Station on 17th March 2014. Beer Card stated 8.2% ABV. Golden with a white head that soon dispersed to a collar and wisp. Slight hop aroma with odd fruit and veg smells, not what I want to smell in a beer. Luckily the taste wasn’t like a mixed bag of produce from the grocery store. The hops rule the flavours with mild citrus notes to the fore becoming more bitter towards the end of each sip. Hides the alcohol well considering it’s body depth and lack of maltiness within it’s make up. OK more than ’great’ and the only Stones beer I had on the day that didn’t get my taste buds excited.

Even the best cannot hit a home run every time. This beer was a failure not due to any glaring flaws but because it tried to do too much. Rather than being a West Coat hop bomb or an English style pale ale it feel into some awkward middle ground. The result? A forgettable release that was soon put aside.
Aroma / Appearance - Minimal carbonation bubbles inside the coppery liquid core. Salty sourdough bread, day old compost, and other slightly unappealing aspects would not have been terrible on their own. Put together though it is like a hop experiment gone horribly wrong.
Flavor / Palate - Vegetal stale tastes stick to the palate like leftover rice in a Chinese food container. Stale bread and lemons help derail a promising sounding description. The glaring flaws eventually make it easy to set this aside and order another sample. Toned down it would be great. Amped up it might work. Setting right in the middle it is just a mess.

[ Tap ][ Stone Liberty Station ][ 5oz ][ Red Wine Taster ][ $2 ][ 2/2/14 ]
>> Clear golden pour, spotty White lacing. Somewhat onion nose and light skunk. Moves to squashy noble hop, honeydew, lemon, fresh biscuit, fresh malt grist. Taste is hoppy, grassy, clean. Long bitter grassy and nutty finish with lemon acid. Liked this one.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
On tap @ Stone Liberty Station. Clear straw pour with a white head. Slight fruitiness of blueberry and lemon peel. Cake, some bread, corn, and some sugar. Lightly earthy and spicy. Flavor has a nice sweetness of bread and lemon cake. Some berry fruitiness, orange, and a lot of pine and earthy hops. Alright.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Medium copper body with foamy white head. Aroma of dry biscuit, spring-time garden soil (very earthy hops in the vein of Fuggles). Tastes of sweet caramel, bitter and slightly spicy hops. Some salty /slightly sour bread/biscuit notes.
Very solid interpretation of the English IPA--captures the essence of UK hops and that nutty biscuit aroma of the maris otter.
