Commercial Description:
When reading the name “Stone Cali-Belgique IPA”, “Cali” hints that it is a California style IPA, and this brew has an undeniable Belgian influence, indicated by the word “Belgique” (which is how Belgium’s French-speaking population says the word “Belgian”; the Dutch speaking Belgians say “Belgie”). We carefully selected a Belgian yeast strain that illuminates a fascinating new aspect of the beer that is otherwise quite simply Stone IPA.

The result is both completely new and different, while still being recognizable as a Stone Brew – and Stone IPA in particular. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.

[2381-20090801] Sample. Ivy greenery aroma has some floral and spice notes. Hazy, light brown body with a long-lasting foamy white head and nice lacing. Nice spicy yeast flavour with a mild burnt straw notes. Medium body. Good.

Pours golden amber with a ton of dense white head. Sweet citruc hop aroma, very sweet and faintly piney (surprise), but not as sharp or spikey as some other Stone IPA offerings. There is a really nice peach/pineapple scent that I can also pick up. The first taste is actually pretty faint on the flavor side. I get a lot of hop and malt, but almost no citrus until later in the palate. Creamy mouthfeel and lasting taste are impressive. I almost prefer this to some of the other Stone offerings in this style. It is somehow smoother and more balanced, to my taste, than the regular IPA. Good stuff here, but not strikingly Belgian in nature, at least not to me...

Clear deep gold with moderate head and neautiful lace. Bright fruity hop aroma, with a peachy sweet and a bit buttery edge to it. Sweet very orangey citrus bite to start, Develops into grassy, citrus hop, and mild bitterness on the finish, which lasts wuite a while on the tip of the tongue. Just a bit of herbiness and yeasty complexity - not obvious, you really have to search for it. This tastes great, but pales in comparison to Stone’s other IPA’s, and the belgian influence is very subtle.

Bottle. Golden? pour, was dark not quite sure of color, with nice head. Decent Belgian ale with slight hop influence. Alright beer definitely not the best they make. Would prefer if they characterized this as a belgian ale instead of an ipa though.

Light copper body and wonderful ivory head in retention. The aroma is undeniably STONE IPA, but a twist…. Spicy esters, mango, guava, grapefruit… the dry-hopping is SO fresh and aromatic that it’s near euphoric! Yet the phenols are a bit shrill. The flavor is tropical fruit and citrusy zest. Sticky palate, Ahhh…. I’m in love!

Botle. Pours a faintly hazy gold with thin off white head. Aroma is classic Stone IPA, but with hints of the belgian yeast and fruitiness. Flavor is dominated by citrusy and piny hops, though there are some fruity notes buried in the background. Finish is dry and lightly bitter and spicy. This one was good, managing to maintain mostly the profile of an IPA but with an added belgian character that adds to the flavor without confusing it.
