Commercial Description:
When reading the name “Stone Cali-Belgique IPA”, “Cali” hints that it is a California style IPA, and this brew has an undeniable Belgian influence, indicated by the word “Belgique” (which is how Belgium’s French-speaking population says the word “Belgian”; the Dutch speaking Belgians say “Belgie”). We carefully selected a Belgian yeast strain that illuminates a fascinating new aspect of the beer that is otherwise quite simply Stone IPA.

The result is both completely new and different, while still being recognizable as a Stone Brew – and Stone IPA in particular. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.

Thanks to Homerwantsbeer for sharing a growler from the brewpub. This brew is a clear pale yellow color with a minimal bone white head that recedes quickly. Spotty lacing on the glass. The aroma is citrusy hops and yeast along with some spices. Medium body with sweet yeast, citrus and hops flavors. The finish is alternatingly yeasty and hoppy, with a resiny hops aftertaste. Sometimes you strike gold when you try something like this, and sometimes you crash and burn. While this beer falls somewhere between those extremes, I always appreciate that Stone is willing to try new beers like this.

Bottle from Joey at South Bay. Pours gold clear with a huge white head. Aroma of fruit, yeast, faint hop. Taste is a little different, kind of like a tripel with hop. This seems to be a trendy style right now, and this was probably my least favorite of all yeasty hoppy beers I’ve had. LeFreak is much better IMO. This beer tasted a little soapy. Not too appealing. Mouth is like a tripel, very light. Finish is mildly bitter.

1L growler provided by JoeMcPhee. Pale pour, highly filtered. Nice, tropical fruity aroma, lychee and mango and banana and such, but there is a brutal rubbing alcohol bit on the late aroma. Bleh. Only lightly Belgian in the flavor, a touch of noticable yeast, but mostly just a light, fruity hoppy sweetness. Not very distinct.

Bottle: (Thanks Mike!) Orange pour with good clarity and a thin off white head. Aroma is a nice blend of American resiny hops and Belgian yeast esters.Mix of oranges, pine and bubblegummy yeast notes. Creamy on the palate. The flavor is bright with a nice resiny and fruity hop character of orange, subtle peach, brief Belgian yeast phenols and a bitter clean finish. Solid and very drinkable.

Ghastly overpriced 22 ounce bottle from Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA and shared with Alraomon, cdumler and Mark the bartender, who seems like a cool guy. Pours a clear orange color with a medium frothy head. Low head retention but nice lacing. Aroma of grassy hops, pear, strone fruits, caramel and mint. Very dry taste with notes of bubblegum, grassy and bitter hops, spiciness and breadiness. Full bodied.

From a growler filled at Stone today. Aroma is hoppy and phenolic. Appearance is a deep gold with a big fluffy white head. Hop flavor and fruitiness from the yeast. Grainy malt flavor. Bitter, dry with a clean finish. An interesting twist on their regular IPA.
