When reading the name “Stone Cali-Belgique IPA”, “Cali” hints that it is a California style IPA, and this brew has an undeniable Belgian influence, indicated by the word “Belgique” (which is how Belgium’s French-speaking population says the word “Belgian”; the Dutch speaking Belgians say “Belgie”). We carefully selected a Belgian yeast strain that illuminates a fascinating new aspect of the beer that is otherwise quite simply Stone IPA.

The result is both completely new and different, while still being recognizable as a Stone Brew – and Stone IPA in particular. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.

Duvel glass coaxes a fine channel of carbonation through a clear, deep amber body beneath a fading, soapy white head. Incredibly floral aroma with lavender being prominent. Yes. I used to enjoy munching those little lavender pressed-sugar candies and this is right on the money. Seriously perfumed, so much as to make my nose twitch. Gentle cheese yeasts eventually make their way through that garden with a bitter backing of hops which seems more German than the PNWs I was expecting. Flavor is intriguing in its layers, starting with hops (both grassily bitter and grapefruitily citric) and finishing on pungent, bittersweet flower petals floating on honeyed orange juice. In all, Cali-BelgiŽ has an almost otherworldly uniqueness. If I could not call this a "beer", Iíd call it a potion. Or an elixir. I never imagined Iíd write this in a review, but this brew is magically delicious. ~~~~~~~~ The beer I selected for my 42nd birthday, 22 oz. bomber from Kenwood Liquors, Oak Lawn, IL.

A definitive yes on the bubblegum smell alluded to by the label. Smells like bazooka Joe, bubbleyum. Sweetness on the nose like your grandma's electric blanket. Great balance on the tongue. This is the best of both worlds. Could smell more complex, but the flavor makes you forget. Attenuation for days, great carbonation pop. Flocculate me timbers ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Iíve always felt like a didnít like belgian beers, turns out I just donít like belgian yeasts.... I dunno maybe Iím undignified in my tastes, but yeah.... I donít really care. I do not like this one bit. Iím going to choke down this glass and store the other one to give to someone who comes over with more class than they have taste... I only hope that they like fancy foreign things more than they like delicious flavor.

Ive always disliked Belgian beers but felt bad because I didnít know why. Now I know why. Stone makes great beers and great ipas, so what happens when you take their IPA and add Belgian yeast? You want to through up... Its pretty gross and now I know why I donít like Belgian beers... Their yeast is pretty bad...

Bomber. Clear lighter orange copper until the sediment clouds it, off-white fading foam. Piney citrus yeasty fruity aroma. Taste is well hopped pine citrus somewhat obscured by Belgium yeast, floral and soapy, mildly sweet pale malts underneath. Softer carbonation, medium bodied. Not a fan of this hybrid style, much prefer the original. NFL (Not For Lagerboys)

Hazy copper pour with white head and an absolute ton of sediment. Aromas of coconut, pineapple, mandarin, slight funk. So fruity. Flavour has some of the fruity components, but not as prominent as the nose. More of a bready malt backing, Belgian yeast character, bitter finish. Good.

Jaune avec un col moyen beige. LíarŰme díhoublon rendu trŤs florale avec la levure belge. Cíest une belle IPA florale, et assez diffťrente de la IPA standard de Stone.

UPDATED: DEC 23, 2014 Keg at BD ShepBush. Clear gold, off-white head, fades to skin leaving good lace. Nose of bubblegum, floral hops, spicy belgo esters. Moderate sweet cereal, pretty big bitter, floral, resin, then touches of bubblegum and spice. Medium light body, slightly oily, moderate carb, loooong bitter finish. Wow, never had it fresh before! Nice.

Not sure why I bought a bomber. I love hops. I generally do not love the Belgian spice/tropical fruit thing. So this is a hopped up IPA with a bit of Belgian thrown in for... what, exactly? Clear golden pour with a big white head. Aroma of maybe a lemony hop, some yeast. Flavour is similar, some citrus, modest bitter and then a touch of bubblegum. Just not my thing.
