When reading the name “Stone Cali-Belgique IPA”, “Cali” hints that it is a California style IPA, and this brew has an undeniable Belgian influence, indicated by the word “Belgique” (which is how Belgium’s French-speaking population says the word “Belgian”; the Dutch speaking Belgians say “Belgie”). We carefully selected a Belgian yeast strain that illuminates a fascinating new aspect of the beer that is otherwise quite simply Stone IPA.

The result is both completely new and different, while still being recognizable as a Stone Brew – and Stone IPA in particular. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.

Duvel glass coaxes a fine channel of carbonation through a clear, deep amber body beneath a fading, soapy white head. Incredibly floral aroma with lavender being prominent. Yes. I used to enjoy munching those little lavender pressed-sugar candies and this is right on the money. Seriously perfumed, so much as to make my nose twitch. Gentle cheese yeasts eventually make their way through that garden with a bitter backing of hops which seems more German than the PNWs I was expecting. Flavor is intriguing in its layers, starting with hops (both grassily bitter and grapefruitily citric) and finishing on pungent, bittersweet flower petals floating on honeyed orange juice. In all, Cali-België has an almost otherworldly uniqueness. If I could not call this a "beer", I’d call it a potion. Or an elixir. I never imagined I’d write this in a review, but this brew is magically delicious. ~~~~~~~~ The beer I selected for my 42nd birthday, 22 oz. bomber from Kenwood Liquors, Oak Lawn, IL.

Small can, Berlin version. Clear straw golden body, medium head. Sweet aroma with spicy Belgian yeast and plenty of floral hops. Taste has sweet malts, spicy Belgian yeast, cloves, white bread dough. Fruity finish with a pleasantly "juicy" and floral hoppiness. Clean, crisp and very good. A textbook example of a Belgian IPA - it’s easy to see how this has both Belgian and American influences.

0.33 l can (Stone Berlin, brewed with Mosaic instead of Chinook) from ’Biermuda’, best before May 2017. Clear, orangeish amber with a large, frothy, almost stable, white head. Sweetish-fruity, slightly herbal-grassy, dank and a bit yeasty-spicy aroma of mango, marijuana, lemongrass, some ginger and a touch of honey. A bit sweetish, already slightly bitter, fruity, dank and herbal-grassy taste of mango, orange, some honey, a touch of ginger and some notes of acetone, followed by a medium long, rather dry-bitter, slightly grassy and a bit yeasty-spicy, peppery finish. Medium body, slightly effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. Nice, but a bit off, doesn’t feel round.

On tap @ What’s Brewing, Stavanger. Pours clear golden, with a big rocky head. Aroma is tart wooden yeast, with fruity hoppy notes of peaches, apricots and citrusy notes. Medium body, with soft carbonation. Flavour is hoppy, with citrusy notes of orange peel and grapefruit, as well as some malts with biscuits. Lingering herbal hops in the finish.

Nice Belgian IPA. Aroma mostly of phenols with some esters and a little hops. Taste a little sour and a little bitter. Mediocre appearance. Drinkable but nothing special.

341 ml bottle poured at home. Pours slightly hazy golden with a pillowy white head. Smells of citrus fruit and grass. Taste is quite bitter with a fizzy mouthfeel. Good beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Can, pours clear golden with a white head. Fruity and floral with banana, lychee, mango, biscuit, citrus zest, bit of pine. Fairly sweet, oily, low carbonation. Lingering baked banana finish with some bitterness kicking in. Belgian ipa indeed.

Tölkki @ Alko. Kaatuu IPA-lasiin kullankeltaisena ja kirkkaana, noin kahden sormen paksuisella vaahdolla. Tuoksussa on vahvaa sitrusta, yrttisyyttä ja belgimäistä mausteisuutta. Makeampaa hedelmäisyyttäkin on joukossa, sellaisena hedelmäkakkuisuutena. Maku on hyvin kukkaisen yrttinen, hivenen puumainenkin, mausteisuus on vahvana taustalla.
