Commercial Description:
When reading the name “Stone Cali-Belgique IPA”, “Cali” hints that it is a California style IPA, and this brew has an undeniable Belgian influence, indicated by the word “Belgique” (which is how Belgium’s French-speaking population says the word “Belgian”; the Dutch speaking Belgians say “Belgie”). We carefully selected a Belgian yeast strain that illuminates a fascinating new aspect of the beer that is otherwise quite simply Stone IPA.

The result is both completely new and different, while still being recognizable as a Stone Brew – and Stone IPA in particular. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.

Tasted at Pacific Park Market in Aliso Viejo and brought a bottle home: Nice looking golden pour with a frothy white head. Very nice aroma of sweetness. I liked the balance between the belgian candy sweetness and the IPA hoppiness.

Opaque amber appearance with a medium size white head and very good lacing. Aroma waffles between piney hops and the funkiness of the yeast. Resin and citrus hops dominate the taste while the yeast yields some spicyness and earthy notes. Some noteworthy twists on their traditional IPA, though not quite as assertive (wish I had one now to taste side by side). Overall, interesting, complex, delicious.

Tap at Stone. Pale golden amber beer with a thick white head. Aroma is pretty solid. Bright peachy fruity aroma with lots of nice Belgian spiciness. Some lightly citrusy hoppiness as well. A nice interplay between the fruity yeast and the fruity hops. Fairly lean and light bodied. A softly tropical hoppy flavour. Spiciness is muted but picks up as the beer warms up a bit. Sort of like a hoppy tripel.

Reviewed 12/30/2008(Draft @ Stone Bistro & Gardens, Escondido, CA): Pours an amber orange color body. Small creamy snow white head, diminishing. Fruity hoppy aroma. Fruity, grapefruity taste. Some hoppy dryness on the aftertaste. Some carbonation. Some fruity bitterness. Nice taste, Belgiany and hoppy. Light fruit taste, maybe pear or something. Creamy palate.

Cali-Belgie who gives a shit. Great looking clear amber with a big pillowy head that laces and stays. Wonderful piney aroma hits you when you pop the cap. Taste is mostly hops with a Belgium hint in the background. Very nice dry, clean crisp finish for an outstanding brew.

Aroma: lots of citrus fruits, mainly orange, but also pineapple. Hops work well with the malt sweetness and yeast character. Palate is more citrus hops, clove, lots of malt sweetness, but not cloying. Slight bit of toffee/caramel. Palate is nice and thick, low (good) carbonation. Finish is really nice. i think this mix works really well.

Amber pour. Aroma of floral hops, orange, and a touch of yeast. The flavor was dry, herbal, and hoppy, almost like a rich APA. Very flavorful, but I don’t taste much of Belgium in this equation. Stone used a Belgian yeast, according to the label. A very enjoyable, fully bittered IPA, some esters, powerful and flavorful. Another excellent Stone release.

Clear amber pour with a small white head. Aroma relates quite nicely to the commercial description; very reminiscent of Stone IPA, with citrus, nectar, and floral notes, but that addition of the yeast is subtle but evident, with a definite spiciness. Flavor is similar to the aroma, and wonderful- apricot, citrus and floral hop, and a bit of caramel malt. Really nice palate, drinks absurdly well. I really dig this brew.
