Sample at GABF 10/04/2014, thanks to my sis for assistance with note-taking. Brown-black color with a medium tan head that diminishes steadily. Partial rings of lace. Aroma of roast malt and dark chocolate. Medium body with flavors of roasted malt, earthy hops and chocolate. The finish is bittersweet chocolate and malt. Pretty good overall.

A solid robust stout with a hearty grain bill and lots of roasted goodness. Light coffee and dark fruit, earthy hops (maybe a touch more than usual for the style) and a lingering finish. Solid

Wanted the lower alcohol beers on my first flight while visiting the Liberty Station Stone outlet on 17th march 2014: this slotted right into that ’lower alcohol’ bracket. Black in the sunlight, with a tanned foam covering. The nose was all ’over roasted’ maltiness with coffee and bitter dark chocolate esters to the fore. Those two aromas also shaped the taste giving a mocha feel to the flavours. The hops gave a dry bitter bite to the brew with the malts offering little in sweetness to counter them. A pleasant and different beer from Stone to anything I’d had before.

Choosing just four samples from such a world class list was daunting but once again I went local with this foreign stout. Not your father’s Guinness, this release has an attitude. Somewhere between a sessionable stout and an imperial stout it is one to enjoy with a hearty meal before you begin the serious rating.

Aroma / Appearance - A carbonated reddish black base radiates a bit of light at the edges. Ebony head graces the top. Roasted coffee, slight spice, and smoke lend their own profile to a well rounded profile.

Flavor / Palate - Smoke, coffee, anise, and residual ash from an old bowling alley fill the palate. The smooth body carries effortlessly to a powerful conclusion with a lingering bitterness. While not exactly a daily drinker this is a beer that is on par with other Stone releases.
