Q: “What do you call it when Greg takes his entire harvest bounty of chili pepper varieties from his own personal garden, take half of them and add to…and thus ruin…an otherwise beautiful oak barrel of Double Dry Hopped Lukcy Basartd Ale?” A: “A Crime!”

Vegetable nose. Peppers, the seeds and ribs, dominate. The first taste is peppers followed by fire. Everyone hates this; it’s OK , I understand. But as the palate gets accustomed to the heat, and the peppers take over the tongue, the sweetness of bourbon barrels starts to come out: vanilla, caramel, spirits. The burn of smoky chiles is still there, but the bite is worth enduring for the savory contents of a truly unique, unusual and worthwhile beer. However, too expensive.

Bottle, pours couldy red brown, small head and no lacing for me. Nose is pepercorn, green grass, malt, hints of other spice. Taste is pepers, fire, spice against a malt background. Hard to drink a whole bomber alone but still really good.

Vicious pepper nose, guajillo? Cloudy rust, thin head. Flavor is dominated by smoked chilis. Mouthfeel is hot for obvious reasons, and rather unpleasant. Good flavor, but it shouldn’t hurt when I drink a beer, or visit the crapper the next day.

Bottle @ The WWGT2D? Tasting. The pour’s deep soupy brown with hardly any head. The nose is a straight pepper bomb. Little else is discernible over the peppers. The taste is similar. An assault of pepper that’s reminiscent of cave creek chili beer. Thanks a lot Obama.

C&C 750 mL bottle shared by ogbuthr at the WWGT2D? Charlottesville tasting, 4/5/14. Pours a hazy reddish brown color with a thin tan head. Fair head retention. Aroma of strong peppers, caramel, bourbon, whiskey. The taste is strong, hot peppers, Not much else. A hint of bourbon and caramel. Medium bodied, STRONG HEAT!!!!

500ml bottle in a tulip. Pours hazy, deep amber with a beige head and some chunks of stuff in the beer. Aroma of caramel and toffee from the malts, bourbon and vanilla and oak, and light pepper. Flavor the same with a nice, HOT peppery finish. Average texture. Cool, but wouldn’t drink more than half a glass.

Bottle. This beer was too hot to drink more that 3-4 ounces. And I like hot. I can’t believe I traded a KBS for this!

Hmmm, how to rate this one. As someone who rants and rants about balance, being very outspoken against over-the-top beers, I’m quite torn. You see, on one hand, this stuff is about as balanced as putting a pound of hops in a blender and drinking the resulting liquid. On the other, I ABSOLUTELY F**KING LOVE IT! Wow. Incredibly spicy, tremendously flavorful chilis are actually supported by the texture and strong, but engaging carbonation. Certainly enough malt sweetness to attempt to balance it. I mean, it’s not too sweet or too dry, I didnt find a ton of alcohol heat and while I’ve never been any particular fan of Lucky Bastard, I just cant’ deny being absolutely in love with the massively firey heat. As a chili beer, this stuff is an easy 4.5+, as an actual beer to drink, I guess its probably closer to a 2.5. Guess I’ll split the difference.

Bottle at Craft Heads, Shibuya. Clear amber - offwhite head. Sharp peppery. Black pepper. Bourbon background. Sweet bourbon. Hot hot chili pepper. Sweet malty notes. Some hops.... The pepper kills almost all other taste. It warms more than a cask strength bourbon...

Bright orange pour with a thin off-white head. Aroma is hoppy, some spices and lingering pepper. Flavor is quite spicy, pepper, jalapeños and several other layers of heat. Finish is soft, mild bitterness, hotness does not longer much. Disappointed to see the bad reviews, if you don't like peppers, why in earth would you buy this then complain about the hot peppers?! This beer deserves a better rating. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
