COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Stone Imperial Russian Stout is so thick, rich and well, sinful, you might worry that you’ll be doomed to the fiery pits just for thinking about a sip. It almsot seems evil. Rest assured, however, that even though this seemingly pernicious brew is indeed as black as sin, we guarantee that no actual sin was committed in it’s production...you’ll have to add that on your own. This Odd Year addition was brewed in the authentic, historical style of an imperial russian stout, but with the addition of several hundred pounds of espresso beans from our friends at Ryan Bros. Coffee. Actually, this could be considered historically accurate, since the Russian nobility were as fond of earthy breakfast beverages as they were of hearty dark beers. Catherine the Great herself bolstered her finesse for ruling an empire by drinking five cups of black coffee every morning during her lengthy reign. While we couldn’t fit five cups coffee in every bottle of this darkly delicious libation, we assure you that the deep, rich espresso flavors are unmistakable and meld beautifully with the roasty bitterness of the dark malts. Catherine would have whole-heartedly approved.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a nice medium size dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of espresso notes with nice dry floral notes and no astringency. Taste is also dominated by espresso notes with no astringency and dry roasted malt notes also noticeable. Black chocolate notes are also very enjoyable. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Body is about average for style with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very enjoyable coffee stout from a brewer that rarely disappoint.

Bottle. 11%. Best before 12.16. Pours black with a dark tan head. Great lacing. Sweet and roasted aroma, with a note of chocolate and a hint of vanilla. Hops in the background. Light alcohol and bread notes as it warms. Flavour is bitter and roasted with a bit of alcohol thrown in. Hints of chocolate and liquorice as it warms. Bitter finish, a bit tart, with a coffee note, lingering alcohol burn and a light grassy note. Soft palate. Overall quite good; well-balanced. 18.04.14.

Nice RIS aroma, but no coffee aroma which you would expect in an RIS. This is more a RIS than a coffee stout or java stout. very thick on the tongue. Mild sweetness but a bitter finish which makes you think of an espresso. Its a nice beer.

I just picked up 5 liters of this on draft in growlers and its gotta be my favorite beer of all time. Flavors so complex and THICK that you can smell the espresso and carmel on your hands! Pours with a spectacular head and very drinkable for a coffee beer... Even people who don’ like beer love it!

UPDATED: APR 17, 2014 2013 vintage bottle from Harlem, NYC. Black with almost no foam. Aroma is very mild coffee and some vanilla; smells great. Taste is bitter roasted coffee which just keeps coming - way too much. There’s pretty much nothing else in the mix here!? Definitely don’t love this beer. Finish is yuck.
