Stone Imperial Russian Stout is so thick, rich and well, sinful, you might worry that you’ll be doomed to the fiery pits just for thinking about a sip. It almsot seems evil. Rest assured, however, that even though this seemingly pernicious brew is indeed as black as sin, we guarantee that no actual sin was committed in it’s production...you’ll have to add that on your own. This Odd Year addition was brewed in the authentic, historical style of an imperial russian stout, but with the addition of several hundred pounds of espresso beans from our friends at Ryan Bros. Coffee. Actually, this could be considered historically accurate, since the Russian nobility were as fond of earthy breakfast beverages as they were of hearty dark beers. Catherine the Great herself bolstered her finesse for ruling an empire by drinking five cups of black coffee every morning during her lengthy reign. While we couldn’t fit five cups coffee in every bottle of this darkly delicious libation, we assure you that the deep, rich espresso flavors are unmistakable and meld beautifully with the roasty bitterness of the dark malts. Catherine would have whole-heartedly approved.

Bottle. Pour is deep black with a small off-white head. Aroma and flavor of dark espresso, coffee, roasted malt, light chocolate, and bitterness. Finish is roasted coffee and not much else.

Transfer on BA review on 6-1-13- Served on tap in a snifter Appearance – Served a nearly pitch black brew with a small tan colored head. The head faded rather fast leaving a lighter level of lace. Upon swirling the beer, fingers of a brown molasses color cling to the glass, slowly making their way back to the body of the liquid. Smell- The smell is big of chocolate and espresso. A semi sweet chocolate smell with hints of vanilla and brown sugar create a nice balance to the more bitter coffee and espresso aromas of the brew. Overall it is big and roasty. Taste – The taste begins with a roasted malt flavor with lots of semi-sweet chocolate up front. With the chocolate comes notes of vanilla and a little bit of caramel. The chocolate begins to take on a slightly more bitter flavor more toward the middle of the taste with flavors of coffee coming to the tongue. The coffee gets stronger as the taste advances and mixes with a light oak flavor at the very end. Along with the increase in coffee and oak so too comes the alcohol flavor producing, when mixed with the rest, a nice warming and roasty flavor on the tongue. Mouthfeel- The body of the brew is on the thicker and chewier side with a carbonation level that is on the slightly lower side. Both match the grandness of the big and dark flavors of the brew and make for a nice slow sipper. Overall – Big, roasty, chocolate covered espresso beans with a nice warming alcohol taste- that is how I would describe this one in a few words. Quit a nice imperial stout.

Bottle, shared with GCDP. Viscous near black. Aroma is chocolate dominated, with husky thick malty undertones, and finally, coffee. The palate opens with rich chocolate, but then the rich espresso quickly moves in, slightly vegetal, some vanilla and bread crusts too. Finish is assertively bitter. Mouthfeel is heavy and silky. The ABV is well hidden. An amazing beer.

Had half a glass on tap, but wanted to wait for a bomber. Had the bomber, but apparently didn’t get to it. Had head to head with a slightly older Espresso Yeti, and it was close. Yeti, with it’s batch variance, can be among my very favorite elites, or simply good. This batch was nice, but not the best I’ve had, and Stone beat it. Aroma was even, Stone ahead on all other counts. Such a smooth beer for the abv. The coffee in the aroma and flavor add to the complexity rather than covering up the dark fruit, roasted and chocolate malt and light anise already in there. A very very solid effort from Stone, and at a good price. Sidebar: I liked the Espresso better than the base 2013 beer, though other vintages of that beer have been better, hence the higher score for the classic IRS."

Opaque black pour with a minimal, yet lasting tan head. Aroma of coffee, molasses and alcohol. The flavor is burnt coffee/espresso, soy, boozy alcohol. Lots of body, flavor and body. Take your time sipping this one or split it.

Bottle... Pours dark brown with a small, creamy, beige head. The nose is deep-roasted and acrid - charcoal, dark chocolate, pouch tobacco and scorched malts. Full-bodied with an oily mouthfeel and light, airy carbonation. The flavor is a bold, burnt and bitter blend of blackstrap molasses, singed tobacco, espresso and an intense, unsweetened, 97% cacao, chocolate bar. Finishes with a very slow transition from burnt and scorched blackstrap molasses to charcoal and campfire ash. Big-time carbonic, torched bitterness lingers for way too long after each sip. Enjoyable despite essentially being an imperial black IPA.

Reviewed from notes. This was poured into a snifter and a pint glass. The appearance was a nice looking dark brown color ranging close to a black color. There was a one finger white to off white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute and a half. The lacing was somewhat clingy and thick. The smell had a nice blend of roasty sweet espresso beans with a fair amount of milk and dark chocolates. The taste took those previously mentioned flavors to town and basically had a superb blend all around. On the palate, this one sat about a medium to heavy with not much of a sessionable aspect about it. The carbonation seemed good and came across somewhat smooth and roasty. Overall, this was a very good offering from Stone, well worthy of having again.
