Stone Imperial Russian Stout is so thick, rich and well, sinful, you might worry that you’ll be doomed to the fiery pits just for thinking about a sip. It almsot seems evil. Rest assured, however, that even though this seemingly pernicious brew is indeed as black as sin, we guarantee that no actual sin was committed in it’s production...you’ll have to add that on your own. This Odd Year addition was brewed in the authentic, historical style of an imperial russian stout, but with the addition of several hundred pounds of espresso beans from our friends at Ryan Bros. Coffee. Actually, this could be considered historically accurate, since the Russian nobility were as fond of earthy breakfast beverages as they were of hearty dark beers. Catherine the Great herself bolstered her finesse for ruling an empire by drinking five cups of black coffee every morning during her lengthy reign. While we couldn’t fit five cups coffee in every bottle of this darkly delicious libation, we assure you that the deep, rich espresso flavors are unmistakable and meld beautifully with the roasty bitterness of the dark malts. Catherine would have whole-heartedly approved.

Bottle shared with Jeevan, thanks to San Diego Steve. Jet black pour, thin tan head. Aromas all about the coffee, light roast malt in the background. Taste has more coffee and some dark chocolate and charcoal. Good body and bitterness. Very nice.

Both on tap at Capones for their 2013 Black Friday event and a bottle to take home with me. Black with a dark brown head. Definitely more coffee in this one then the base beer, still lots of dark roasted and semi-burnt malts, only a slight hint of anise but some fruit tang that seemed out of place on the nose and lingered on the finish. Full body and mild+ carbonation, smooth and almost seemed lighter the base beer although I always prefer it with a bit of age on it so maybe have been more that then the espresso.

WOW!!! That's the one word that came to mind with the first sip. The nose is filled with the scent of dark, strong coffee setting the taste buds up for a treat. Definitely a full bodied taste just like an Imperial Russian Stout should be. Add in the flavor of a good strong cup of espresso along with some chocolate notes and violas...you have one of the best stouts ever. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bomber from winooski beverage warehouse. Pitch black with small head. Small head retention. nose big coffee with licorice and molasses. Nice earthy and spicy coffee notes. Taste lots of coffee with bitter coffee notes and some dark chocolate. Molasses as well. Finish lots of coffee, rather bitter and slightly alcoholic. Mainly coffee. Slightly acidic. Very nice coffee profile. powerful coffee aromatics but not too much. That being said, it feels a bit unidimensional. Still pretty well balanced and fairly drinkable. Nice carbonation, A bit on the strong side but nothing too intense.

Bomber bottle share 2013 odd year release. Aroma is a sweet, dark malt. Some coffee, as well. Appearance is black with a little tan head. Taste is espresso and dark malt that finishes sweeter. Palate is dry and espresso. Overall, a good take on a good beer. Would buy again and put more age on it. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: JUL 27, 2014 Temporary rating. At some point I might re-write this.

Black, small frothy fizzy blackish dark choc brown head, quick diss, small trace. Malty, heavy dark roast coffee, roasted malts, green chili, moist soil, resinous wood, dark choc, lemon zest, alcohol, ash, coffee hard candy, Sweet, bitter, roasted malts, banana bread, caramel, espresso coffee, moist soil, hay, peppery resinous wood, salty liquorice, bitter choc, alcohol, pine, ash, own baked slightly burnt bell peppers. Round, soft, roasted astringent, medium to full. Bitter, espresso, roasted malts, liquorice, bitter choc, hay, wood, soil, alcohol, Starts out with a rather bell pepper green chili dominated coffee character in the nose but taste balances everything out perfectly. Pleasantly estery big coffee bomb. Tasty!

22 oz. bottle. Pours brown black with a nice khaki tan head that fades to a wispy film and collar. Aroma has strong roasted malt coffee and chocolate with some soy. Taste is coffee right up front with roasted malt and soy and bitter chocolate mixed in. Palate is full slick a little sticky and warming. Solid!
