Stone Imperial Russian Stout is so thick, rich and well, sinful, you might worry that you’ll be doomed to the fiery pits just for thinking about a sip. It almsot seems evil. Rest assured, however, that even though this seemingly pernicious brew is indeed as black as sin, we guarantee that no actual sin was committed in it’s production...you’ll have to add that on your own. This Odd Year addition was brewed in the authentic, historical style of an imperial russian stout, but with the addition of several hundred pounds of espresso beans from our friends at Ryan Bros. Coffee. Actually, this could be considered historically accurate, since the Russian nobility were as fond of earthy breakfast beverages as they were of hearty dark beers. Catherine the Great herself bolstered her finesse for ruling an empire by drinking five cups of black coffee every morning during her lengthy reign. While we couldn’t fit five cups coffee in every bottle of this darkly delicious libation, we assure you that the deep, rich espresso flavors are unmistakable and meld beautifully with the roasty bitterness of the dark malts. Catherine would have whole-heartedly approved.

Awesome. Strong roasted aroma with coffee. Very black with a thin tan head. It looks rich. Smooth, weighty and full palate. Decent carbonation but not too much. The espresso is a good compliment and doesn’t overpower the richness of an already great beer. Rich dark malts with a balanced hop bitterness. Alcohol is there but well-hidden. Remarkable.

From notes, consumed on 5/12/13. Bottle poured into a Belgian snifter. Pours jet black with half a finger of tan head. Aromas of coffee, roast, espresso, caramel, bitter chocolate. Tasting notes of big espresso, roast, caramel, coffee, dark chocolate, coffee bitterness. Full body with a dry finish.

Pours a pitch black body with a frothy tight bubbled dark brown head that had nice retention and lingered like the head of an actual espresso. Pretty great nose, lots of rich dark toast coffee and roasted malt. Smells very intense, almost more like an espresso than a beer. The flavor has just the right intensity of coffee, it’s head to head and neither had the upper hand. A little bit of chocolate and burnt caramel on the finish along with a fairly noticeable alcohol kick. Thick and chewy body with just a little clinginess and soft fizzy carbonation. Rather warming on the finish from the alcohol. Pretty nice beer, I like this considerably more than the regular version.

Bomber--really, really wonderful stuff, I waited for a cool to cold evening to drink the beer and it was perfect. The chocolate and coffee aroma hits you as you are pouring the beer. As a non-coffee drinker, I have no idea on what espresso smells like, but I like the coffee smell. The beer is black with a good size, tan head that leaves lots of lacing, looks delish. The taste is chocolate, roast malts and a coffee kick. Nice thick, solid finish. Lives up to its reputation. Mansion house, 7.00.

The aroma is (of course) dominated by roasted coffee, dark chocolate, raisins and licorice. It’s a good beer overall, but it’s got some way to go to the top. Bought at Systembolaget about 6 months ago.

Growler from State Line Liquor. Pours an almost pitch black with khaki colored head. Aroma is strong roasted malt and coffee. Taste follows the nose with a strong bitterness. I find it difficult to differentiate between the Imperial Russian Stouts due to the subtleties as compared to Imperial IPAs but this beer is solid. Medium to full bodied and very smooth. I would definitely purchase this one again.
