Bottle poured deep black cola with a medium tan head and notable lacing. Aroma is soy sauce, vanilla, roasted nuts, slight booziness, and dark chocolate. Taste begins with big malt and bourbon flavors followed by dark fruit, bakers chocolate, and subtle hop bitterness leading to a warming on the finish. Relatively smooth despite ABV, would have liked to get more pecan, but overall enjoyable.

Tap at Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA - but as a share by beerboxer. Pours very dark brown/black with a slight tan head. Aroma is malty and a bit winey. Flavor is chocolate, treacle, wine/rum with hints of oak sour. Kind of missing the bourbon I guess, but it’s packed with lots of flavors. Even hints of oaky sour astringency. Did not even notice the heat. Great ale.

Bottle. Pours opaque black, small Brien head that dissipates quickly and leaves decent lacing. Aroma is light roasty, cocoa. Flavor has some bourbon, medium sweet, medium bitter, a fair amount of astringence. Finish is bitter and biting. Full body, creamy mouthfeel, kind of hot.

Poured deep black in my snifter. Little head and little lace. Really fresh. As it warms, fruit character comes out. Little nose. Lots of black and dark tobacco notes. Where is the pecan? The rye and wheat is apparent. Very earthy and leathery. 13% ....you would never know it. I hope to get another bottle and try next year. This needs age. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bomber from Capone’s and drank out of a stemmed snifter. Pours thick, oily black and viscous from the bottle with medium carbonation. Brown head quickly fades to a faint ring. Surprised at the wimpy aroma coming from such a complex and strong brew. Subtle pulls of caramel and nut. Slightly acrid waft that may hint at a slight culture of wild yeast? Some cacao nibs and bitter coffee too. This is 13% abv and by Zeus’ beard you can tell! Bark belies the bite! Super roasty with a slight bourbon harshness that creates a nice burn on the tongue, which I am sure is abetted by the rye. Oak and nuts abound. Favors enhance when served around 50 degrees as opposed to right outa the fridge. Zero lacing, leaving scant evidence of the damage it has left behind. Interesting offering. Nice chase to this beer, took me a couple tries to get eem.

Cracked the regular bottle (saving the super hero). Aroma of nuts, bananas foster and molasses. Pours black with a brown small lacy head. Taste is super weird with banana nut bread notes and molasses sarparilla notes. Just when you think these tastes are going to become unpleasant, some great caramel bourbon notes creep in. A mouthful of this beer is certainly a journey. Shut up, Wesley.

Bottle. Black with a short tan head. Aroma is strong roasted malt, toasted nuts, smoky malts, boozy notes and hints of vanilla. Taste is strong roasted malt, smoked malt, toasted nuts, burnt caramel, vanilla, booze, bittersweet dark chocolate and hints of dark fruit. Body is medium-full and slightly syrupy withe a dense, bubbly carbonation. LOTS of warmth throughout this. The 13% ABV makes it’s presence known very early into this bottle. Finishes with more vanilla, roasted malt, booze, toasted nuts, dark chocolate and burnt caramel notes.
