COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
It’s no secret we helped create and popularize West Coast style IPAs (since 1997), Double IPAs (since 2000) & Triple IPAs (since 2006). In fact, IPAs of every ilk imaginable are our bread and (hop) butter at Stone Brewing Co., but we’ll be the first to admit that a night of subsisting solely on big IPAs can be a short one. Enter Stone Go To IPA, our session IPA, boasting all the gloriously bitter, citrusy, piney flavor of our bigger / industrial-strength IPAs, but with a significantly lower alcohol-by-volume (4.5%) allowing IPA fans like us to enjoy more of this amazingly, hoppy beer over a longer session, without giving up any of that gloriously crave-able botanically-driven dankness. Well, OK, when you compare to our bigger IPAs you find that you give up some, as that’s what happens when you dramatically lower the abv. And while we work hard to bend the time/space/abv intensity continuum, we’ve admittedly not yet learned to break it. This comes damn close though.

Draft. Clear gold pour, thin head. Nose is citrus, fruit, floral. Flavor is biscuit malt and some citrus. Finishes bitter. Not my cup of tea.

Poured with a very thick cream-colored head. Cloudy, dark amber. Typical IPA with grapefruit and intense hop flavor. Also, something like peppers (reminds me of other Stone beers).

Pale golden color, very clear. Not much of a head after the pour, and barely a pencil thin ring of foam after a minute. Looks a bit lacking on carbonation, but the smell is definitely enticing. It has a big citrus hop nose as advertised, with fruity taffy notes and a floral tinge. The taste has the same citrus hop burst, and it really doesn’t have much malt balance. It is clean, a bit watery, and where you expect that malt flavor to be, it is like it disappeared. The finish is nicely bitter, but still feels like it lacks something. The carbonation is actually fine on this beer, despite the initial appearance. Clean, light bodied. Stone definitely succeeded in what they set out to do here: a low ABV yet west coast hop intensified beer. I love the idea of a session IPA, though it’s hard to say if I love the finished product. It’s very good, don’t get me wrong, but just like some IPA’s can get too strong on malt, this one borders on being too light. That being said, I am still going to drink more of this, and hopefully it grows on me more.

Served on tap. Orange color with a white head. Citrus hop aroma. Clean medium body. Hops, malt, and citrus are what are involved in this beer. Balanced but nothing special. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Tap at Brewdog Birmingham. Poured a hazy straw colour with a frothy white head and lots of broken lace. The aroma is resin nettle hop. The flavour is moderate bitter with a crisp, yeast, grapefruit citrus hop bitter, light spice palate. Light bodied with average carbonation.
