Look up "hops" in the dictionary and youíll see a picture of Stone IPA! "Dry-hopped" for an extra two weeks, this unique process gives our IPA its bountiful hop aroma and rich hop flavor. A full 70+ IBUs (International Bitterness Units) creates this beerís crisp and refreshing bitter character.

A mostly clear, deep amber body under a mostly lasting, rocky, off-white head that laces in morse code (a dash here... a dot there...). Heavy pine and citrus aromas, with soapy touches of Irish Springģ and black pepper. Flavor starts with a smooth malt, then itís all delicious, grapefruity hops. Despite some dryness, I find a long, tinlgy hop finish and a clingy mouthfeel. Extra points for the 2-color screened bottled. Iíd like to try this alongside a Bellís Two Hearted and a Dogfish 60 (but, hey... who wouldnít?)

P.S.††I looked up "hops" in the dictionary (as per the advice of the Commercial Description) and did not find a picture of Stone IPA. I did not find a picture of anything, for that matter. I feel used...

bottle from brickskeller. color: pale gold. aroma is hoppy, but more herbal than most american IPAs. flavor is fairly hoppy, still piney despite the aromaís indication. a little light on the malt for my taste.

On draught at Mugs Ale House. Transparent charneol colour. Big citric/mandarin nose. Citrus anf grapes are most prominent in flavour, malt balances pretty well. A dry hopped monster thatís crisp still. Very flowery. And drinkable.

Pours amber transparent with a nice thick head that stays around. Initial aroma was strong hops then a little malt creeped through. Flavor is mostly hops but a nice malt taste in the background. Pine and citrus also come through. This beer has some real carbonation that helps to give it a nice feel on the palate. It is a very solid IPA maybe the best Iíve tried yet. Great flavor and nice on the palate. I have a ruination in the cellar waiting and this just got me all that much more excited to sample that one! Stone Rocks!

Initial strong aroma of hops that settled down to a more subtle hop aroma after a minute. Poured with a golden color, and a frothy head that was still a half inch thick a few minutes after pouring. Very well-balanced flavor with a mellow hop bitterness and a good amount of hop flavor that melded very well with the malt backbone. Rich mouthfeel that felt almost creamy from the fine carbonation. The beer coated the mouth for several seconds after each sip. This evolved into a pleasantly ligering aftertaste that was a good mix of bitterness and hop flavor. This is an excellent, well-crafted beer.

Granted, there are no bad Stone beers and this one added to my excitement. Very hoppy and a good set up prior to experiencing Ruination IPA.

UPDATED: OCT 26, 2011 April 19, 2005, chilled 12 oz. bottle (also sampled in the 22 oz. "bombers"). Been drinking this for months, canít believe I havenít rated it yet. Huge aroma invites you to dig in. The powerful burst of hoppy -- yet balanced -- flavor keeps you coming back. A world-class brewery, and an IPA against which all others are judged.

Oct. 26, 2011: More than six years later, Stone IPA is still the "gold standard" - as good as an IPA gets.

Pours a clear gold color with a thick rocky white head. Excellent aroma of resinous and spicy hops. Excellent flavor of spicy and resinous hops with caramel and a strong lasting bitter finish. Light to medium body, creamy texture, soft carbonation. Excellent IPA.

Pours dark golden orange with nice soapy white head. Huge pine hop aroma with just a touch of citrus. Lots of pine and citrus again in the flavor, but it doesnít have as much of the bitterness you would expect from the aroma. Still very nice indeed.
