4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: NOV 4, 2005 [bomber] Part of my recent IPA frenzy, this is my first experience with Stone brews, and after hearing a lot about them, I had my expectations up. I was impressed from the beginning- clear, golden amber color and fluffy white head. The aroma is strong citrus and piney hops. Flavors are immediately strong hops, then sweet caramel and malts. This is a real smooth-drinking IPA, but it still has some serious punch. I will definitely pick this one up again.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from GBBF 05, but drunken at home. Bright gold, poured with a fluffy white head. Smells good - a little piney citrus. Flavour: initial fresh hops, then a relaxed malt streak. Banana tinged, flat, sharp finish (some polish). Very tasty, but I think the bottling possibly left this a little lacking in the middle order. MORE STONE BEERS IN UK WANTED, PLEASE!

2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 10/20
golden color with a hoppy taste and a medium head. The problem is that I just donít like this IPA. I can get much, much better on a daily basis.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Transparent and bright yellow in color with some tiny, swirling bubbles for the head. Nice lacing tracts on the walls of the tulip as we go along, helping to bump up the appearance rating by a point. Aroma is where the party starts. Fresh morning rain on newly cut grass, honeycomb, saffron, mild mango and juicy papaya extract. Absolutely delicious. Crisp and sweet flavor. Moderate pineapple and citric signals, honeydew, pine-scented car air fresheners and sugar sprinkled grapefruit. Fairly light bodied, sweet, cleansing and a palate feeling that begs for more. Nicely balanced with a bitter-sweet and satisfying finish. Very good IPA.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Well, Iíve been drinking a few different ipaís recently, so I felt ready to give this highly rated brew a try. Wow, much hoppier in both aroma and flavor than any otherís I have tried. The hops dominated too much for my taste, but I guess thatís what itís made to do. A treasure for hopheads for sure. Still, a fine beer.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: APR 6, 2006 Pours a light golden with an ample head and active carbonation. The nose dominanted by citrus, pine, and a whiff of humus, and the first sip - ahhh! This is a macho IPA, with a powerful blast of hop flavor and a full, rich mouthfeel, but that doesnít mean it lacks refinement. Quite the contrary - this beer brings forward plenty of sweet citrus and floral tones, it balances the aggressive hops with a warm roasted malt, with flavors that pass from grapefruit to malt to nuts, hiding the alcohol nicely, before drifting into that long and lovely bitter hop finish. This is a great beer, worth revisiting time and again.
Upon numerous additional encounters with this beer, my rating has fallen somewhat. Sure, itís a great "first-sip" IPA, but itís not my top choice for a well-balancing drinking IPA. Rather, it comes out on the sweet, sticky, oily, nearly IIPA side of the matter, and that hurts it in the scores.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Hazy golden orangish color. White thin wispy head. Aroma of citrus and piney hops. Starts slightly sweet and finishes big and hoppy. Malts are pretty much hidden. Nice hop backbone for this aggressive beer. Taste is nearly all hops in every dimension. Finish slightly sweet and highly bitter.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours crystal clear golden orange with a rocky ivory head. Smells of herbal hops, fruity yeast.
Taste is all hops. Sharply bitter hops offset with lighter fruity citrus hops. Medium bodied and lightly crisp. A dry long lingering bitterness. Good stuff, not a classic but good.

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle. Foamy white head dissipates somewhat quickly. This is an odd aroma beer-- from the bottle you get a concentrated hop-forward, full body IPA blast, but in the glass a lot of that fades away, leaving subtle citrus (grapefruit) and grassy/pine notes; not the hop assault on the nose I was expecting. Very well balanced hop and malt taste-- initial spice and bitterness is immediately smoothed out by slight sweetness. Medium body. Finishes quite dry, while at the same time leaving a nice sticky sweet aftertaste. Stone is fantastic and consistent across the board, an easy favorite!
