4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
The hops come forth as soon as the cap is popped from the bottle. Besides hops the nose is sweet and bready. Of course the hops are flowery and citrusy. The color is orange amber and it pours with a good head that lasts but is not frothy. The flavor is hoppy(of course) with a slight hint of honey and bread. The mouthfeel is moderately full and is just right for the style. The finish has a lasting bitterness with pine citrus notes. Very good beer, in fact the best IPA Iíve had to date.

(12 oz bottle; 22-Nov-04) An excellent IPA with a sweet, bready maltiness and a balancing, moderately strong, fresh hops flavor. But I wouldnít say this IPA is dominated by hopped by any means, and thatís fine with me because I typically prefer a more balanced IPA. Once the sweet breadiness wears off a bit, the hops bitterness is moderately strong and extends the finish considerably, but again, itís not as bitter as the description would lead you to believe -- Iíve had many IPAs that were much more bitter. It has a malty and very bready nose, but also some mild hoppiness. In fact, if youíve ever been to the Stone brewery and reveled in the glorious aroma, this IPA smells just like that! Medium bodied, but the mouthfeel is quite full and substantial. Medium golden color, somewhat cloudy. Whitish head has good size on the pour, but settles to a thin sheen, leaving modest lacing. Very well done indeed!<hr>Rerate (12 oz bottle: Hi-Time Wine Cellars; 01-Feb-05 and again on 17-Mar-05) Iím doing a separate review for this bottle since itís apparent to me that my previous rating was for a bottle that probably sat around for a bit. I just purchased this bottle by mistake, but I wish all mistakes were this fortuitous because this must be a very fresh bottle, and it has inspired me to do a second complete rating. Whereas the bready maltiness showed quite a bit of presence in the previous bottle, here, we have an all out hops assault on the taste buds and nostrils. In fact, Iím not getting any breadiness anywhere. The nose is very hoppy with a moderate, sweet citrus aroma in the background. The flavor is very hoppy, very bitter, moderately citrusy with a mildly sweet and fruity base for balance. This beer is dark golden in color and completely clear, not one iota of haziness, unlike the bottle in my previous rating. The off-white head pours to almost a full inch in height and maintains a thin layer for the entire session, leaving numerous streamers of lace drooping all over the glass. For a standard IPA, this is superb. And proof that freshness matters with IPAs.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: APR 13, 2005 After years of begging out of state friends to bring this to me when they came to town, someone finally came through. Pours a light orange color with a thick head. Good lacing. Itís very hoppy but not overly bitter. Very tasty beer. Iím glad I finally got to sample this brand.

UPDATED: MAR 16, 2005 Fantastic! Very light orange color, slightly cloudy. Hoppy scent and flavor, but not as strong as the Ruination IPA from Stone-try that one too. Great lacing all the way down. Head reduces but never disappears. Enters mouth discreetly and flavor builds as it travels to your belly. You canít go wrong with this beer. Also, its great with smoky barbequed meats.

Close to my ideal beer. Sampled on draught at Tria in Philadelphia, PA, which incidentally is a GREAT beer bar and well worth a trip. Big rocky white head tops a pale, clear, slightly orange body. Huge hop nose, very flowery. Initial sip knocks you back with bitterness but subsequently sips reveal a subtle complexity. Stone managed to get the right balance between maltiness and hoppiness. The resut is a full bodied beer that just seems right. Very refreshing and thirst quenching, although a bit too high in alcohol to be my session beer.....

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: NOV 27, 2010 A good IPA in the West Coast microbrew tradition. Good aromatics and crispness with a downplayed malt character. Restrained citrus and resin in the nose and taste gives way to clean bitterness in the finish.

A harmonic, melodic balance of ingredients that fuse together to provide me with everything I look for in a beer. I really enjoyed this one.

3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: JUN 14, 2005 This one pours a light amber with a creamy, not bubbly, offwhite head. This is, quite simply, an amzingly hoppy and amazingly great brew. The alcohol is very prevalent, but this one is dominated in nose and taste by the pineapple/citrus bitterness. There are some malts, but they are minimal. I like balance, but in this case I make an exception.

UPDATED: JAN 20, 2006 Orange color. Lots of citrus hops in both the aroma and taste. One of my favorites. I love the hops.
Bottle. Pours clear orange color with a thin white head. Mostly piney hop aroma with some citrus. Very pungent, piney hop taste, a little grapefruit as well. Very bitter. Light and easy drinking. I like this beer, but with it being one of my first ratings, was very high.
