3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: APR 6, 2006 Pours a light golden with an ample head and active carbonation. The nose dominanted by citrus, pine, and a whiff of humus, and the first sip - ahhh! This is a macho IPA, with a powerful blast of hop flavor and a full, rich mouthfeel, but that doesnít mean it lacks refinement. Quite the contrary - this beer brings forward plenty of sweet citrus and floral tones, it balances the aggressive hops with a warm roasted malt, with flavors that pass from grapefruit to malt to nuts, hiding the alcohol nicely, before drifting into that long and lovely bitter hop finish. This is a great beer, worth revisiting time and again.
Upon numerous additional encounters with this beer, my rating has fallen somewhat. Sure, itís a great "first-sip" IPA, but itís not my top choice for a well-balancing drinking IPA. Rather, it comes out on the sweet, sticky, oily, nearly IIPA side of the matter, and that hurts it in the scores.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Hazy golden orangish color. White thin wispy head. Aroma of citrus and piney hops. Starts slightly sweet and finishes big and hoppy. Malts are pretty much hidden. Nice hop backbone for this aggressive beer. Taste is nearly all hops in every dimension. Finish slightly sweet and highly bitter.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours crystal clear golden orange with a rocky ivory head. Smells of herbal hops, fruity yeast.
Taste is all hops. Sharply bitter hops offset with lighter fruity citrus hops. Medium bodied and lightly crisp. A dry long lingering bitterness. Good stuff, not a classic but good.

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle. Foamy white head dissipates somewhat quickly. This is an odd aroma beer-- from the bottle you get a concentrated hop-forward, full body IPA blast, but in the glass a lot of that fades away, leaving subtle citrus (grapefruit) and grassy/pine notes; not the hop assault on the nose I was expecting. Very well balanced hop and malt taste-- initial spice and bitterness is immediately smoothed out by slight sweetness. Medium body. Finishes quite dry, while at the same time leaving a nice sticky sweet aftertaste. Stone is fantastic and consistent across the board, an easy favorite!

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Hopheads would love this beer. It has a pure a hop flavor as anything that Iíve had before. Personally, I prefer a more balanced beer, so this was a little too bitter for my tastes. But by definition, this is probably the perfect IPA for those who love hops to dominate.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Ah... as this warms, the hops really come out to play. Pour was a clear golden color with just a little head. Nice intricate lacing as it went down. Aroma is of grapefruit and pine forest with just a little sweetness under there. Flavor mimics the aroma quite well. There was sufficient malt presence to hold the super-hops in check. Finish was piney and a bit bitter. This was just powerfully good on all fronts. Get some!

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
A citrus bouquet of scents rises from a crisp gold beer. Texture is slightly oily. Flavour is hops all the way and the malt is strong enough to balance them. The slick texture cries out for some spicy food for compliment.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
bomber bottle from Eric ( Heemer77 ). color is a bit paler than I expected but the appearance is of a hazy honey color andl has that nice foamy, rocky head. initial aroma is of grapefruit zest. to me this is a great example of a beer with high hops that is in perfect balance with the malts. If I had sampled an IPA like this several months ago, I would have understood much sooner what it means to be a HOPHEAD! Thanks Eric.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
This is a good american IPA. The aroma is very nice and I love the orange-tint to color. It just looks like it will taste good. A funny thing on my first bottle, I could have sworn a slight diacetyl flavor(butterscotch) in the background. I tried the second bottle (which is what I am rating today) and it was not there?? Maybe a faulty batch on the first one? Otherwise this is a good IPA from Stone who usually mucks up beers with bravado and stupidity (see ruination and arrogant bastard ales)
