3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
There is a difference in West & East Coast brewing styles. This IPA has all the features of a West Coast IPA I expect.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Aroma was hoppy with some citrus. A hoppy flavor with a touch of caramel when warmed. It has a hint of pine. The color was golden with a small bubbly head. This is well balanced, but I have many IPA I enjoy more.

4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
- cloudy, orangey/amber color, light white head, brussels lace, well-hopped with a malty mix in the aroma, just a touch of sweetness typical in English ales; excellent flavor, well-hopped, but well mixed with the malt flavors, just a touch of sweetness in the aftertaste, bitter at the beginning, a great IPA, one of the best I’ve ever had

4.5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 19/20
The best West Coast IPA I have ever tasted, Hop Devil being the best in the East. Awesome aroma of fresh hops, a tiny smidge of malt (and I mean tiny), great aroma, great color, absolutely great everything! One of the very best...what more can I say.

UPDATED: FEB 16, 2003 The only 5.0 on my list... Start with the unbelievable hop aroma... and then on to nirvana!!! I can't decide which is the better Stone IPA... this one, or Ruination!?!?!

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
This hazy, orangey golden brew has a medium, white head. The nose is full with herbal hoppiness and the slightest nuance of maltiness. The palate brings out the malty character with roasted grains and nuttiness. The finish resumes the hoppy character with some herbal/lemony bitterness.

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: FEB 9, 2003 Reddish-orange, mostly clear (filtered?), disappearing head and light carbonation. Aroma is equal parts sugary malt, sort of like pound cake, and citric hoppiniess that is lightly acidic. The flavor profile is dominated by a pungent, sharp bitterness. There's a bit of malt sweetness here I think, but more in the needle-in-a-haystack sense. Rather harsh and reminiscent of bile. The aromatic hops are quite nice, and I'm pleasantly reminded of the Arrogant Bastard, but I find this too acidic and bitter to be all that enjoyable. I actually prefer the Ruination to this one.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: FEB 8, 2003 Talk about hops. This beer was loaded. If anyone knows how to hop out a beer, it's Stone. If you lust for hops like I do, get this beer. Aroma, taste, everything loaded with hops. What a great beer.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
I have not had a better IPA. Stone Ruination IPA may be better in some very rigorous sense of the word. It is like the Platonic IPA -- all others mere reflections, or maybe mixed with a touch of lager. But this isn't intimidating and over the psychotic top like the ruination. It's drinkable any time, requiring no mental steeling, no palate flexing. Deep, slightly cloudy orange. Looks rather like the beer on the cover of Michael Jackson's Ultimate Beer. Beautiful. Piney aroma, modest bitterness, basically, just incredible.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: MAR 2, 2003 Bottled: Orange golden coloured. Has a medium lasting head. Aroma has notes of earth and flowers. Flvaour is hops, hops, hops, hops and ..... Boy oh boy. My palate was carpetbombed with hops. Quite pleasant, really, with this massive bitterness in the palate. If this is gonna be the standard of the 6 californian beers i've traded from herbjones, i'm gonna be a lucky man!
