4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
DATE TASTED: October 2, 2013 ... GLASSWARE: Duvel tulip... OCCASION: the Browns on primetime TV--a chance at 3-2!...APPEARANCE: orange-peach hazy body supports a thick crunchy near-white head; beautiful display of bubbles with cirrus lacing... AROMA: as remembered, this IPA slams a pinecone of citrus orange peel up the nostrils, with a bit of apple too...PALATE: full-bodied, immersing the tongue in a bitter bath of effervescence; aggressively active in its aftertaste...TASTE: a crushing hops avalanche--alcohol is well hidden but warming--and enough malt to balance (?!) the mad mix-- a true feat...OVERALL: spending a summer discussing the best IPAs with a few colleagues made me want to review a few from the hallowed halls, and one of the first true west coast gems I indulged in was this label-less intimidator...Stone delivers the Cali attitude befitting its gargoyled mascot...

Beautiful beer. Frothy head good lacing. Citrus and grass. Almost balanced. Light fruity notes. Sticky mouth feel. Fair ipa, I wish it was fresher.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Aroma is citrusy, nice and hoppy. Flavor is citrusy and hop flavor does stick with you like its brother ruination but for a normal IPA it is nice.

WAY too malty - like a Fat Tire mixed with a lot of hops and a fair amount of paint thinner. I love a big hoppy IPA, but with Stone, the hop bitterness isn’t floral or aromatic - it’s simply bitter and unpleasant. If I had purchased a six pack, I’d have poured out five of them. If there is a worse IPA on the market, I don’t want to know what it is. This is simply awful. On the plus side, the color was nice, and the label is cool.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle brought back from Denver. Pours a clear orange colored beer with a creamy white head consisting out of very small bubbles. Aroma is light citrus, apples, grass and light fruits. Very fresh smelling. Flavour is light bitter, juicy and very fruity again. Long, medium bitter aftertaste and medium carbo. Very nice session IPA. Great stuff.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Great west coast style ipa. Looks great in a glass with lots of lacing. Big hoppy aroma with a medium mouthfeel. Hops, hops, and more hops up front with a little malty bread finish, but maybe not enough to balance it out a bit. What it does, it does as good as any big american style hoppy ipa.

3.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Dat lacing. Pours a hazy straw color with a nice white head. Brilliant lacing n the glass. I love it. Fruity estery aroma along the same lines as Ruination. Taste is mostly hops - resin is strong and pine is in there. Mild citrus flavor peaks through as it warms up, but not enough. Good beer, but doesn’t feel very balanced. I prefer a little more malt character in an IPA. I think this beer’s big brother Ruination hits the nail on the head in terms of balance.

3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Nice floral aroma, with pine. Pours a deep golden color with light white head that lasts for days. The taste is very bitter not overly complex a little bit of sweetness on the end to balance it out. Grapefruit is the dominant note but also piney. Medium bodied, sticky mouthfeel and very soft carbonation. Overall it is really good but doesn’t give the complexity that can be found in a lot of IPAs these days to make it stand out of the crowd other than the Stone name.
