COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This deep amber ale has rich & roasty malt flavors, a big hoppy character, citrus overtones (courtesy of the hops and our special brewers yeast) and modest alcohol.

Light copper with big dialup off-white head. Nose of caramel, fresh bread, juicy citrus and pine. Good roasty malts are balanced well with slightly biting resinous hop presence. One of the best ambers around. Especially nice at 4.4%!

12 oz. bottle. Pours clear reddish-brown with a short off-white head. Very hoppy aroma - citrus and spruce. Roasty malt flavor upfront, but quickly overpowered with lots of bittering and finishing hops. Dry, bitter finish. Medium-light bodied and pretty smooth with moderately low carbonation. Lots of flavor for a relatively low ABV beer. Enjoyable.

Pours a mahogany/red color with a tawny head. Medium co2 with a sticky lace. Aroma is of malt and caramel with a grassy hop presence. Tastes lightly sweet at the start and middle with a dominant hop finish that is downright numbing. Palate is medium bodied with light effervescence. IMHO: an OD on the hops.

I shared a bottle of this with BeerBaron617, we picked it up as part of a pic six. Umm, well, all I can say about it is that as a beer from Stone, I am not all too impressed. I think they do a great job with IPA’s, but as an Amber Ale, I think they tried really hard to be something they weren’t. It looked great, nice amber red color with a white head. Aroma was a bit towards the IPA side, pretty hoppy. I didn’t feel like this had a lot going for it outside of wanting to be an IPA. As a Stone beer, it was ok, but as a beer I would want to buy regularly, not so much.

Looking forward to this one. Levitation pours a dark copper tinged with ruby red. Light tan head starts out strong but fades fast, ending up with about a half to 3/4th of a finger worth of head. I’m using a tulip pint glass for this one. The aroma is strong with this one. Huge notes of pine hit the nose first, with more citrus and floral hop character in the background. Along with the hops there is a nice caramel malt undertone to this whole thing. Likewise, piney hops hit the mouth first, splitting the tongue and washing to the sides of the mouth. The first couple sips are all hops, and like the aroma. It’s earthy pine, followed by tropical fruit and some light floral characteristics. This has that nice West-Coast style dank hop character that so many other great beers have. Unlike its other West-Coast brethren, however, what it doesn’t have is a lot of alcohol – the ABV on this is only 4.4%. More on that later. As the palate acclimates the malt profile really begins to shine through. The easy comparison is caramel, but for me this is more like toffee. Still there’s no question that hops are the star of this beer, and hops are what will bring you back to this beer again and again. Lingering moderate bitterness is present after you take a drink, though at no point is it unbearable or uncomfortable. The lightly creamy mouth feel is somewhat thin, though not watery or inappropriate. Carbonation is light to medium. The beer finishes crisp and dry, though there’s a nice level of malt sweetness that comes out the more that you drink it. Honestly, everything about this, from the aroma, to the taste, to the mouth feel, screams big beer. It’s truly amazing that Stone packed this much flavor into this type of package. Most of the time session beers can come across as bland, watery, and without much in the way of flavor. With Levitation, Stone has turned that assumption on its ear, creating a full-flavored Pale Ale / IPA / Red Ale beer that doesn’t have that huge ABV punch. Over the years the boys in Escondido have produced a number of extraordinary beers that I’ve enjoyed, but quite honestly Levitation may be the best of the bunch.

From bottle. Nose is full of sweet floral hops. Pours deep amber with a pale and foamy white head. A mixture of sweetness and some bitterness, and a full mouthfeel. Not a bad offering. All the signs of a good ale, if just a little boring.

330ml bottle from Ølhandleriet. Tiny white head. Clear, but slightly cloudy amber body. Aroma of light hops, citrus, yeast and butter. Quite sweet on the tongue, bitter long lasting taste.

Aroma is malty with a hint of citrus fruit and smoke. In the mouth it has a lovely balance citrus hop character rounded off by a rich toasty malt. Impressive and very drinkable. Shows what can be done without maxing out the malt bill in a beer.
