COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Life is extraordinarily precious, joyous...and fragile. At Stone, we recently were reminded of this when we lost our dear friend and coworker, Matt Courtright. We felt that there was no better way to share with the world what an extraordinary person he was than by brewing this beer he created. Rather than a somber momento, please think of this as a celebration of Matt. We do. We can’t contemplate it any other way. Matt was by no means a shrinking violet. Quite the contrary. He was exuberant, courageous, outwardly positive, and the type of stalwart friend everybody who knew him was happy to have in their corner. Matt’s smile and voluminous laugh were infectious mainstays around the brewery. He was larger than life in every way...and he was without a doubt an incredible brewer.

Everyone at Stone recognized Matt’s prowess and passion for brewing. He loved to explore what-ifs and why-nots. He crafted the beer you hold in your hands, which he conceived with Stone friend and colleague, Brian Bishop. Burning Rosids is a Belgian-style saison incorporating a unique ingredient-cherrywood smoked malt (the name references the rosid plant family from which cherry trees hail).

Brian and Matt’s many devoting brewing comrades here at Stone were proud to hoist this mash paddles and brew this recipe for him as a symbolic gesture of how much he meant to everyone and how immensely he is missed. When you enjoy this very special beer, please join all of us in raising your glass in Matt’s memory and to everything he so passionately stood for: contributing and caring for others, passion and skill for his art, and laugther. Lots of laughter. Among the list of things he held dear was GoDesignInc.org, a charity committed to fulfilling the architectural needs of developing communities around the world, and we are proudly contributing funds earned through the sale of this beer to this worthy organization in Matt’s honor. Enjoy, and please remember that life and those we hold dear are precious gifts to be cherised every day. Consider sharing this beer, conversations on life’s passions and, again, lots of laughter, with good friends as we remember ours.

Light with an incredibly thin head. Aroma of funky saison style yeast and light smoke. But the taste is way overboard smokey. Awful, even if you were expecting smoke flavor. The idea sounded good but the smoke just overpowered everything. Can't even finish a half glass poured off this bomber. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

2/19/14: Bottle date unknown. Pretty sweet. Fruit (mostly apple), bread, some funk. A little smoke in the nose, though slightly clinical. Good carbonation. Pretty decent. 5/11/15: Bottled 12/31/13. Very thin head, light carbonation. Smell is cider, apple jam, some yeast, a bit of spice. Taste is slightly bitter, intense sweet spiced apple and yeast flavors with lots of charred woody character. Finish is nicely complex and abrupt. Really interesting beer from Stone.

Bomber. Pours a hazy, pale gold, medium white head with okay retention and lacing. Nose is mildly funky, fruity, some grass, earthiness, toasty bread. Mouth is medium bodied, creamy, leads in a bit sweet, then goes slightly tart, then bitter. Green apples, hay, bread dough, yeasty spice, touch of cloves, soap. Actually pretty complex. Not sure how pronounced it was a year ago when it was bottled, but there’s so little in the way of smokiness (...and that’s definitely not a bad thing in my book...) it would’ve been completely lost in a malty or funkier beer. Matt sounds like he was one hell of a cool guy and I obviously can’t speak for him, but if someone did this beer as a tribute to me, I would be touched.

Bomber given to me 13 months ago by my sister-in-law as a birthday gift. Pours a slightly hazed (unusual for a Stone beer) sunset-orange hue with two fingers of off-white foam. AROMA of a lovely sticky fruity sweetness, honey, typical saison yeast, light caramel, light spice, but only a tiny bit of perceptible smoke on the back end. FLAVOR of quite sweet overripe stone fruit, juicy apple, honey malts, Belgian yeast, with some subtle but definitely noticeable smokiness on the back end. The smoke is certainly subtle but makes itself known at the very end of the finish, blending in smoothly. The huge ABV is very well concealed here...actually drinks very easily (a little dangerous). Perhaps the rauch element has mellowed with the year of aging, but I find that style-wise, this is much more saison than smoked...I would suggest that it be re-classified here on RateBeer. I am finally getting around to trying this Imperial Cherrywood Smoked Saison. First glass I served in a snifter as I wasn’t too sure which way to classify it - strong beer? saison? smoked? It poured a gleaming copper gold, very much like an IPA but the nose while full of fruity hops is blessed with that subtle smokiness from the cherrywood. Soft and fragant best describes this aroma. The body is spritzy like seltzer water but you get a hearty dose of saison funk(much more than I ever got in their Stone Saison) counterbalanced by cherries and smoke like a campfire BBQ. I am not sure how this was fresh but right now the flavors are superbly balanced and I am getting the saison, cherry & smoke in perfect harmony. Top Knotch, one of the better Stone beers I’ve had. Plus you’d honestly never think this was 10.5%!
