Life is extraordinarily precious, joyous...and fragile. At Stone, we recently were reminded of this when we lost our dear friend and coworker, Matt Courtright. We felt that there was no better way to share with the world what an extraordinary person he was than by brewing this beer he created. Rather than a somber momento, please think of this as a celebration of Matt. We do. We can’t contemplate it any other way. Matt was by no means a shrinking violet. Quite the contrary. He was exuberant, courageous, outwardly positive, and the type of stalwart friend everybody who knew him was happy to have in their corner. Matt’s smile and voluminous laugh were infectious mainstays around the brewery. He was larger than life in every way...and he was without a doubt an incredible brewer.

Everyone at Stone recognized Matt’s prowess and passion for brewing. He loved to explore what-ifs and why-nots. He crafted the beer you hold in your hands, which he conceived with Stone friend and colleague, Brian Bishop. Burning Rosids is a Belgian-style saison incorporating a unique ingredient-cherrywood smoked malt (the name references the rosid plant family from which cherry trees hail).

Brian and Matt’s many devoting brewing comrades here at Stone were proud to hoist this mash paddles and brew this recipe for him as a symbolic gesture of how much he meant to everyone and how immensely he is missed. When you enjoy this very special beer, please join all of us in raising your glass in Matt’s memory and to everything he so passionately stood for: contributing and caring for others, passion and skill for his art, and laugther. Lots of laughter. Among the list of things he held dear was GoDesignInc.org, a charity committed to fulfilling the architectural needs of developing communities around the world, and we are proudly contributing funds earned through the sale of this beer to this worthy organization in Matt’s honor. Enjoy, and please remember that life and those we hold dear are precious gifts to be cherised every day. Consider sharing this beer, conversations on life’s passions and, again, lots of laughter, with good friends as we remember ours.

Hazy amber pour with a 2 finger, creamy white head. Aroma is cherry smoke, spicy phenols, tree fruit, bready yeast, stone fruit and sweet, fruity floral notes. Flavor starts with an interesting pitted or stone fruit bitterness, maybe form the cherry wood smoke, maybe some other addition, but it doesn’t seem like hops, light clove spice, bready yeast, cereal and sharp, but sweet floral notes. Medium body creamy, oily and chalky feel throughout with a light acidity. Very tasty overall, the smoke plays very well with the rest of the beer, fruity and spicy as it is, I would be very interested to know the overall ingredient list of this one.

650 ml bottle. Pours a hazy orange amber with light white head that dissipates quickly. Aromas of light smoke, sesame oil, oranges and meaty yeast. Flavors of light oily smoke, citrus and melons, and creamy yeast. OK

Bomber from Potsdam, served cold, shared. Hazy amber, thin white head. Moderate smoke with some Saison character behind it, the smoke is meaty. Medium+ body with gentle carbonation, creamy. Fairly smoky with phenolic and estery Saison character; lightly sweet with moderate bitterness and some alcohol.

On tap @ 2SP. Pours a clear, deep, orange-gold color with a two finger whitish foam head. Aroma is classic Belgian saison yeast, some citrus, and a hint of smokiness. Taste is not as smoky as the nose, with yeast and earthy spices that come through nicely and are accentuated by light notes of woody smoke, sweet sugary golden fruits, candied fruit, and mild booze. The finish has hints of cantaloupe and spice, and the aftertaste is sweet, boozy and lingering. Medium to full body with a moderate carbonation. Finishes a touch dry.

Hazy rusty orange, nice off white head. Aroma of smoke, fruity lemon. Taste is stronger smoked than I had expected, some lemongrass and grains, slight tartness. Pretty interesting if nothing else. Thanks Kevin!

YUM! Pours a glorious IPA esque orange with a finger of dense white head. The head dies leaving a few splotches of lace on the glass. The aroma is complex with earthy, smoke, vanilla, citrus and a caramel malt. Nice mid palate with sweet toasted malts and light fruity flavours. The malt is toasted and caramelized with sultry smoke notes that linger into the finish. Good balance and a warm boozy finish. Overall, a great brew.

A moving tribute to Matt, this was sampled at the Greenville beer festival. It pours light golden into the glass with a nice frothy head that leaves ring lacing. A nice smoked grainy barnyard bouquet ensues. Honey, smoke, cherrywood and hay/grains make the core of this Impy saison. Yeasty esters finish the pull quite nicely. Very full of flavor, complex and substantive, this full-bodied offering goes down well and is greatly appreciated, not only for its offering but for its story.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Danceing Camel Florentin. Thanks ariel. Hazy amber-gold with white head. Phenolic, charcoal, a little cherry in the nose, smoky, phenolic, then sweet like rose water in the mouth. Medium body, slightly smoky finish, OK.

I love all stone bottles. Clear pale gold with a massive pillow white cap floating on top. Mild apple, hints of smoke, wheat, caramel, more stuff. Daaa what the hell is this?? The after taste is so black and acitic. Am I a fan? Not sure. Why is my stomach warm.... oh this is 10.5%..... never new that when opening this. So very sweet, sugar every where in this. Rotten apple, acid, smoke is so mild. Man this is not a beer for me it just don’t agree with my pallet. Old wheat, caramel. Sorry stone this is a miss.

Bottle. Golden pour with a thick finger of white head. Aroma, fruity esters, spice, and a bit of smoke. Taste is light bitterness, followed by smoke (or toasty as my girlfriend calls it), some light sweetness and more smoke on the aftertaste, mouthfeel and carbonation are medium. Overall this is really well balanced, nice hint of smoke, some sweetness, delicious. Not for everyone I guess but I really like smoked beers.
