COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Life is extraordinarily precious, joyous...and fragile. At Stone, we recently were reminded of this when we lost our dear friend and coworker, Matt Courtright. We felt that there was no better way to share with the world what an extraordinary person he was than by brewing this beer he created. Rather than a somber momento, please think of this as a celebration of Matt. We do. We canít contemplate it any other way. Matt was by no means a shrinking violet. Quite the contrary. He was exuberant, courageous, outwardly positive, and the type of stalwart friend everybody who knew him was happy to have in their corner. Mattís smile and voluminous laugh were infectious mainstays around the brewery. He was larger than life in every way...and he was without a doubt an incredible brewer.

Everyone at Stone recognized Mattís prowess and passion for brewing. He loved to explore what-ifs and why-nots. He crafted the beer you hold in your hands, which he conceived with Stone friend and colleague, Brian Bishop. Burning Rosids is a Belgian-style saison incorporating a unique ingredient-cherrywood smoked malt (the name references the rosid plant family from which cherry trees hail).

Brian and Mattís many devoting brewing comrades here at Stone were proud to hoist this mash paddles and brew this recipe for him as a symbolic gesture of how much he meant to everyone and how immensely he is missed. When you enjoy this very special beer, please join all of us in raising your glass in Mattís memory and to everything he so passionately stood for: contributing and caring for others, passion and skill for his art, and laugther. Lots of laughter. Among the list of things he held dear was GoDesignInc.org, a charity committed to fulfilling the architectural needs of developing communities around the world, and we are proudly contributing funds earned through the sale of this beer to this worthy organization in Mattís honor. Enjoy, and please remember that life and those we hold dear are precious gifts to be cherised every day. Consider sharing this beer, conversations on lifeís passions and, again, lots of laughter, with good friends as we remember ours.

Pours a cloudy orange with a thin off-white head. Funky barnyard aroma. The flavor is complex with hay, sour cherries, overripe oranges, wood, and citrus characteristics. Medium body with medium to high carbonation. Finished fairly dry with just a hint of cherry lingering on the tongue. Very nice, I would definitely recommend giving this one a try.

Bottle. Pours light cloudy with cream 1 finger head. Aroma is very dense. Smoke, yeast, meat, wheat, mandarin, wood, old smoke, cherry, sugar, fruits, orange. Taste is dense as well. Quite sweet, peach, smoky and peaty. Wood and sweet wheat, mandating, light peat and umami. Full body, soft carbonation. Light marmelade. Dry smoky finish with lots of oak.

Bottle thanks to LukasMH. Pours an innocent, hazy golden with a small, white head. Aroma has leathery smoke, fruity peachy notes, wheat, alcohol super well hidden, strong yeasty spice. Taste is super dry, smokey, bitter, fruity sweetness, dry, smokey finish. Medium high carbonation, smooth body with a well hidden alcohol.

Bottled. Saddle brown, cloudy, with a small white ring of head. Aroma is not nearly as smoky as I was expecting, instead itís got some sweet peach and pineapple atop heavy caramel malts, toffee and the mildest of woody smoke. Orange zest, spruce, cherry wood, oak and light smoke in the flavor. Finish is moderately bitter with notes of grapefruit rind and soft leather. Syrupy texture despite some bright carbonation. Quite good. Bright and cheery, but the bit of smoke adds considerable depth.

February 22nd, 2014 - I made a point to read the commercial deScription before jotting down the review, and Iím glad I did. This is a warm story, shedding the traditional Stone abrasive challenge to the drinker and telling a story about a well loved and well respected brewer. This beer - this formula - comes from him, and thatís an origin story I can appreciate. The beer is a pretty golden color, with some visible carbonation near the edges of the glass, and a short, thin white head. The aroma is fresh and creamy, with a slight dairy nose tang and rosehip with orange and lime zest. The saison style is there, but itís very tangy, and very nice. In spite of those visible bubbles earlier, the carbonation is on the flatter side, and then the taste launches its gymnastics routine. It flips in with a toasted grain flavor, and then to something more verdant like raw coffee beans, or cooling tea, or maybe some bitter walnut. Then it introduces a strange bitterness, like Japanese houjicha or soba. The aftertaste brings in some of that rose hip from the aroma, floral and even a little herbal. I also detect the smoked flavor here too, once some of the carbonation falls away. So now the cherrywood makes sense, though I admit, I have little exposure to the stuff in my life.

Hazy, golden, slightly reddish appearance with very thick and persistent head. Malty start that gives way to a tart/sweet cherry flavor. The smokiness eventually follows. It finishes with a pronounced alcohol burn. A challenging beer and very good.

Pours a slightly hazy, bright golden orange color with slightly lighter edges and a two finger white head that slowly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Good retention, taking a while to settle with streaks of soapy lacing left behind. Visible carbonation bubbling up. Slightly smoky aroma with an earthy wood character thatís nicely integrated into the saison elements. I was worried that it would overpower everything but itís pretty delicate with hints of wood, charcoal, grilled meat and liquid smoke countered by peppery spice, funky farmhouse yeast and crisp light fruit. Smoke and wood character along with pepper, coriander, grassy, spicy hops, musty funk and bread/yeast. Light fruit sweetness with hints of strawberry and cream, rhubarb, apple and pear. Subtle booziness. As a big fan of smoke beers I kind of wanted more in the nose but the aroma is nicely balanced with a decent amount of saison character. Smells pretty good. Medium body with tight carbonation but the mouthfeel is pretty soft and delicate. The beechwood smoked malts are a bit stronger than in the aroma but this beer is still decently balanced with nice saion flavors. Slightly dry with lingering delicate smoke flavor giving off hints of burnt wood, charcoal, bacon BBQ, liquid smoke and subtle peat. Really nice smoke flavor along with some charred wood thatís reminiscent of some of the lighter schlenkerla offerings. Smoke and wood are prominent and although this is stronger than the aroma suggests, itís not completely overpowering. Saison notes are slightly muted but thereís still a strong peppery spice presnce and subtle farmhouse funk. Dry brett character shows a bit more as it warms but itís somewhat faint. The peppery spice compliments the smoke/wood and is followed by bread, yeast and light fruit sweetness. A touch of citrus along with apricot, grapefruit and apple. Some boozy sweetness in the finish but the high ABV is excellently masked making this well balanced beer dangerously drinkable. Has more smoke than the aroma, which I like, but the saison characteristics could be a bit stronger. Otherwise itís really solid experimental take in the style.

I had this aged a year, so perhaps the flavor developed a bit. A complex strong Belgian ale. Aroma & flavor is smokey and light tart cherry, with some wheat and yeast in there. Also getting some sweet citrus in there. Not overly carbonated and bubbly like a lot of other saisons. Has a medium orange appearance. Alcohol bite well hidden for 10.5%. Iíd like to find this again and try aging around 3 years.
