Served in a nonic pint glass, the beer pours an orange/amber color with about an inch off-white head. Head retention and lacing are both good. Aroma is pine and citrusy hops, caramel malt, brown sugar, and some apricots. Taste is similar to the aroma. Surprisingly the hops are still strong in this brew after 2 years. Pine and citrusy hops dominate, while caramel malt, butterscotch, booze and brown sugar flavors are noticable, too. There’s also a good lingering bitter hoppy finish. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s a bit syrupy and slick with moderate carbonation. Drinkability is good, although you can tell there’s some alcohol in this brew! Overall I think it’s a good beer, aging it hasn’t hurt it although aging it a bit longer wouldn’t be a bad thing either. MmmcKay (276), Brentwood, Tennessee, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 23, 2009 This barley wine pours a deep copper, amber color with a off-white creamy head. Aromas are immediately of sweet alcohol, hops, and a good bit of malted barley. It would really smell reminiscent of a malty double IPA if it weren’t for all that barley. The rich body of the beer has more pleasant sweet flavors of honey, raspberries, and raisins offset with heaps of hops. Obviously, massive amounts of ingedients were used in the making of this brew. While this barley wine may not be a typical of the genre, its rich unrestrained flavors make it worth drinking down to the last drop. Stone doesn’t ever to seem to miss the mark. nwiseman (10), West Lafayette, Indiana, USA

You can almost smell how thick this is going to be. Pours a deep amber and relatively clear with a thick luscious off-white head. Taste is slightly sweet with a some bitterness. Leaves an almost fruity flavor (pear maybe?) as well as that bready barley taste. A very tasty beer, but at 11%, this one’s a sipper. wyzzywyz22 (779), Wirral, Merseyside, England

Poured a copper colour with a nice looking off white head. Caramel malt and big juicy hop aroma with butterscotch and orange peel notes. All these elements were present in the flavour along with some spiciness . Some dryness towards the finish. The 11% alcohol is pretty well masked and I enjoyed this one. Would like to tuck a bottle away. dand645 (96), Bayonne, New Jersey, USA

| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Nov 7, 2009 This thing is amazing. It actually tastes more like an Imperial or Double IPA than a BarleyWine. The pour is a golden red with a little of a white head. The nose is powerful; full of pine from the hops and a very sweet malt from the barley. There are hints of caramel, and citrus as well. The flavor is wonderful, sweet malts and then huge hops. I tasted licorice and cognac??? The palate was oily and stuck around awhile. Great one Stone! I need to cellar one of these... Veer (355), Landskrona, Sweden
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 7, 2009 Aroma: very powerful, fruity, grape-like. Fresh, majestic hops, heavy malt, figs, prunes, cinnamon, caramelized sugar. The sweet, deep malty profile is very balanced up the fresh hops, reeking of lemon, grape and leaves. Very, very nice indeed.
Flavour: huge! Sweetness hits you, and a sledgehammer of bitterness, not half a second later. I can taste wild raspberries, banana, licorice-like malt, great juicy hops. Very big-bodied, slightly acrid and noble. The aftertaste is very sweet, but again it is balanced up by the good amount of hops. Pears and cognac can also be sensed in the aftertaste. To be quite honest, the sweetness makes it almost too big. I think I would prefered it a tad bit drier.
Appearance: slightly dim apricot with the style-typical yellowish head. The head diminshes rahter quickly, leaving a thin foam-film that tells of the sweetness and cloys to the glass.
Palate: oily, fluffy, big. Madeira-like. Very nice sparkling quality. Runs off the tongue like oily, sweet satin.
