Copper colored barley wine with a little foam. Aroma of malt and alcohol. Sweet and dry hop taste, too strong in alcohol.

from notes: This beer is one of the better offerings from Stone. I dare to say that it is in fact better than the Double Bastard, if only slightly. People are saying that the hops overpower the malt, but I feel that it is almost perfectly balanced. More akin to a East Coast DIPA than a Barleywine. Very decent.

Aroma is all malty sweetness with some piney hops in the background. Thick, full body. Big malt backbone you’d expect from a barleywine but with very present bitterness. Seriously bitter, finishes for a while. Solid barleywine, one of the hoppiest I’ve tasted.

On tap at Bender. Typical but really well executed west coast barley wine. Very sweet but balanced out with lots of hops. Flavors meld very well and don’t compete.

2012 bottle. Stone manages to make a very nice barley wine by ensuring the hops balance out the sweetness resulting in a beer that is not cloying and balanced in alcoholic character. Of course it has that sweet syrup barley wine aroma that practically defines the style. It pours a murky coppy with a fine head that leaves sheets of lacing. There are notes of caramel, alcohol, oak and over-ripe fruit. The body is similiar to that of a triple, being medium in feel but numbing with alcohol. Overall I think that Stone has epitomized barley wine with this brew. Good job Stone.

2012 vintage. 22 oz bomber into a tulip glass. A - Dark red clear body. One finger light khaki head. Moderate amount of lacing and retention. S - Great balance between rich toffee malts and grapefruit hops. Caramel, pine, and some dark candied fruits. T - Super smooth and sweet. Grapefruit and piney hops, vanilla, dark fruits, and rich toffee. Finish is a tad boozy with some faint bitterness. Chewy and smooth mouth feel. O - Perfect example of an American barley wine. Loads of rich toffee and malt sweetness with just the right amount of citrus hops which lends a nice piney bite. Delicious and well priced.

UPDATED: MAY 6, 2012 2012 bottle: Pours a orange copper penny color with aroma of citurs and floral hops. Taste is very hoppy and bitter throughout the beer. A grassy pine needle note, with a floral highlight. Aftertaste is bitter and lingers well after the swallow. Overall a decent barleywine, just not my style.

Murky deep dark brown pour, very little head. Big caramel malt aroma along with some earthy and grassy hops. Taste is sweet malt balances by strong bitterness. Incredibly smooth for a barleywine and a slight alcohol burn on the finish. A very good barleywine. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
