Scopey 10K Celebrations in deepest Croydonia. Big thanks to Leighton, been after this for years! Very hazy deep amber beer, small pale cream colour head. Palate is smooth, semi dry. Decent fine carbonation. Smooth malts, trace of thin cream. Mildly bitter toffee. Trace of citric peel. Mild red wine builds in the mid. Modest spice. Smooth finish. Nicely layered barleywine.

Bottle share at Scopey’s 10,000, many thanks to Leighton. As ’2011 Old Guardian Temecula Red Wine’, 10.5%. Very dark mahogany brown, hazy, opaque, still, small foamy tan head. Aroma is leather, resin, boiled sweets and a little mint. Body is medium, smooth, low carbonation. Taste is toffee, sweet fruits, boiled sweets, touch of red wine. Nice but too sweet for the likes of me.

Nose is rich malt, toffee, red berry, spice, tannins, red wine barrel, figs, toasted sugars. Bottle shared in London during Scopey’s 10k - I picked this one up at the brewery. Old fruits in the nose, earth, bread, toasted caramel. Medium sweet flavor with earthy bitterness, some oily pine, dried fruits, berries, leather, orange peel. Medium to full bodied with average carbonation. Warming finish, plenty of oiney bitterness, jammy fruits, leathery berries. Great stuff. It’s a few years old now but there’s still a lot of kick here. Good beer.

Bottle, big thanks to Leighton. It pours deep red-brown with a small beige head. The nose is soft, sweet, juicy, boozy, dark fruits, honeycomb, red berry, vinous, red wine and earth. The taste is rich, bitter, woody, boozy, earth, leather, red grape skin, fruit cake and toasty action with a dry, warming finish. Medium - full body and fine carbonation. Well-rounded and quite boosty. Good fun.

Pours a dark ruby red/chestnut brown color with a minimal off-white head that quickly settles into a thin, lasting ring. Minimal spotty lacing left behind. Prominent vinous red wine barrel presence in the aroma with subtle oak/toothpick, vanilla bean and vinous dark fruit sweetness. Strawberry and cream with grape, sour cherry, currant and other dark berries. Strong wine character that sort of overpowers there barleywine notes. Underneath, there’s some leathery malt, caramel, toffee and muted hops along with hints of date, fig, raisin and port. Very nice! Medium body with soft carbonation and perfectly integrated vinous red wine barrel flavors that linger over the leathery malts, sweeter notes and resinous hop bitterness into a slightly dry finish. Some dry roasted oak but it’s not overpowering or heavily charred. Some vanilla bean and damp wood followed by vinous fruit sweetness, notably grape, strawberry, tart cherry and blueberry. Similar to a barbera wine. Under the heavy barrel presence, there’s some leathery malt along with toffee, biscuit, fig and raisin. Really nice beer with complex flavors that are very well balanced. High ABV is excellently masked making this complex beer very easy to drink. Never would have guessed it was 11.2%. This series of barrel aged beers from Stone can be hit or miss, but this might be the best one I’ve tried up to this point.

On tap @ Stone Brewery, Escondido - CA. Color: orange brown beer with velvet purple reflection, no carbonation and white foam. Smell : malt and sugar domination. Barrel notes but not extrem red vine presence and raisin. Taste: amazing complexity very great work on malt and hops with great sugar and very strong notes of caramel and alcohol. Oily sensation. Aftertaste: alcohol finish and malt! Very great!

Not an improvement over the base beer, but an odd and intriguing combo of flavors and aroma that I was still glad to have tried. Ripe fruit and a little acidity, oak, more malty than hoppy anymore. Covers the heat almost completely.
