On tap at DLD 2010. Rich red color. nose of some citrus hops and crystal malt and some mild fruits. noticable wine and barrel character in the nose and flavor. I prefer this over the standard ol guardian.

08 on tap at Dark Lord Day ’10. Orange colored pour with a loose off-white head. Faint vinous note with lots of pine, very sweet, some light fruit, floralness, clover honey and slight cardboard. Sticky slighty thinnish body with lots of carbonation and a little astringency.

Tap at Oakquinox. Orange copper color with a thin head. Aromas of some sweet malt. Taste of the standard OG with a bit of wood, fruit sweetness. Some bitter hops of course but mellowed a bit. Prefer this to the original.

Guest tap at DLD 2010. Pours a cloudy, copper-orange colored body with a finger-width, creamy, white head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is a solid mixture of fat caramels, juicy citrus pines, and red wine. Perfume-like spices and a mixture of oranges, apricots, and a light amount of grapefruits make up the hops, but they have clearly taken a bit of a back seat in comparison to the original. Some toasty toffees and a bit of a vanilla-barrel smell accompanies the red wine. Flavor is pretty similar. Lots of thick caramels and toffees with the toast coming out a bit from the wood. The hops seem to kick it up a bit in the flavor as compared to the aroma with a solid piney citrus and apricot. It all blends nicely with a somewhat subtle red wine and vanilla flavor that is definitely not meant to overpower. The wine seems to bring out a few extra fruity flavors that I didn’t pick up in the aroma though, which is nice. Ends a tad boozy, sweet, and still a bit resiny with a mostly dry, oaky finish that leaves a balanced, moderate bitterness. Lengthy aftertaste following a round and full, somewhat sticky body and soft carbonation. A bit thick drinking at times. Overall, a nice take on the original. The red wine and barrel is fairly subtle and added a nice complexity. I guess I was expecting a bit more, but this was still very enjoyable. Glad to have had the ability to try this.

First beer of the day at DLD 2010. Pours reddish copper with off-white head. Aromas of caramel, sweet malts, hops, and faint red wine notes. Flavors of sweet malts, caramel, faint hops, little bit of dark fruits/red wine and just a little booze. Much more mellow than I remember the regular Old Guardian to be. Pretty good stuff.
