3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
In short: A sweet fruity caramelized Belgian strong ale. Or is it a barley wine with a fruity yeast Belgian character? Good brew
How: Tap at Extreme Beer Fest 2010.
The look: Partly cloudy dark golden body topped by an off-white ring of foam
In long: Pleasant basic sweet fruity nose. Taste is fruity (no specific fruits), sweet (caramel, brown sugar), some leafy hops. A bit yeasty. Lively carbonation and mouthfeel. Overall it did come through as a cross Belgian strong ale and a barley wine to me. So I’d say that Stone were successful at creating this crossover beer. It’s not great but I’m surprised to see the rather low ratings so far on this nice offering. I hope Stone bottles it. It is a nice change. And I always welcome change. Especially late at night, drunk and standing in front of a vending machine full of Twinkies.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
1L swing top growler thanks to DuffManSW. Dark amber pour with a huge, frothy, white head and great lacing. The aroma is heavy on the banana and clove with notes of caramel and dates with some spicy rye like malt component and pine needles. The flavor is again dominated by banana-clove esters. It’s a little spicy. There’s notes of tree fruit and a lot of alcohol. The flavors seem to clash a little bit. The heavy hops and belgian yeast don’t work perfectly together. The body is creamy and full with soft carbonation and an alcohol bite.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
1 liter growler fill at Stone during the first day of Winter Storm 2010. Poured a golden amber color with a tiny white head. Aroma had strong presence of the Belgian yeast, sweet sugars, and some hops. Taste was the same and really tasted different than regular Old Guardian. I prefer the regular version as I think the Belgo yeast overpowers this beer.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Tried from a sample from a growler fill at Stone’s 2010 Winter Storm. Amber color. A little Belgian yeast in the aroma. Sweet, but not as sweet as regular old guardian. Higher IBU is a little odd combo with the Belgian yeast. Interesting, but I like regular Old Guardian better.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Growler filled at the Stone Winter Storm...Pours the same as regular old guardian..Aroma is basically just belgian yeast which I am starting to shy away from, can’t really pick up any of the regular Old guardian notes..Flavor is sweet and malty with the belgian yeast again..Cool to try something different.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Tried from a metallic growler shared by DuffManSW, thanks for popping this. Rating #4. Dark copper pour with a small white head. Aroma was a little spicy, very belgian like, it really dominated the aroma. Flavor was similar, peppery spiciness, really hard to get any of the regular Old Guardian characteristics out of it, still pretty nice though. (1116)
