COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
When our illustrious brewing team spiked a few barrels of the Stone Old Guardian Barley Wine with our Belgian yeast strain last year, we absolutely loved it. So much, in fact, that we knew we needed an excuse to make more. So, in our unending quest to constantly challenge the status quo (even our own), we came up with Odd Beers for Odd Years, a program to release odd beers – e.g. Stone Old Guardian BELGO Barley Wine – in odd years (2011, 2013, 2015…). It was met with a bit of resistance (to say the least) since we weren’t originally offering the traditional Old Guardian alongside it, but we’ve mended our ways and decided to make both. You’re welcome.

Dark amber brown color with a small head. Aroma has a lot of spice and bread with some sweetness and yeast. Flavor is sweet and loaded with spice and must. Full body and the yeast really shines. Good idea but I didn’t really love it.

Thanks to Diego for this one. A: Pours an amberish brown hue with an average tan head. No retention or lace. S: Aromas of belgian yeast. Lightly sweet and fruity with hints of citrus and grass. T: Worlds different than regular Old Guardian. Yeasty Belgian esters mostly banana and bubblegum with mild spicey notes. The hops are still here with nice sweet pine and enough bitter citrus to make this a real interesting brew. M: Medium in body, nice carbonation for the style. D: Very good. Tasty and unique. I would say Stone put a unique yet tasty twist on this one.

I got the end of the keg at the Barley Oak in Mandeville, LA. Got it on the house as a result. Orange/copper colored pour with lots of foamy head (made bigger by it being the very end of the keg, I’m sure). Floral nose with yeasty and wheaty notes. Flavor was biased to the hoppy side with some sweet grape and apple notes and a tangy tart hint. Bitter finish with a subliminal citrus hint.

Draught at the Stone Domination hosted by Aces & Ales. Kinda like you took a British style barley wine and added Belgian yeast and some extra sugar. Seemed a little disjointed at first, boozy and overly sweet, but it improved as it warmed.

Draft @ EBF. Amber pour with some light tan head. Sweet fruit, belgian sugar, apple and pear aroma. Belgian qualities overtake beer, sweet malt and fruit flavors accompany with some yeast and a light warming.

Tap at hams on my birthday. Pours a dark brown with a tan head. Nose is sweet and rich with maybe a touch of belgian flare. Ok, I can taste the belgian yeast and candy sugar in this, its really different and really good.

On tap at Firkin in Libertyville. Dense creamy white head with a deep red-orange color and some very light haziness to it. Aroma is very clean, mild banana esters, strong hoppy citrus nose and some light piny notes at the end. Flavor has a mild banana ester note with some light funky character early but then a smooth hoppy bite takes over with orange citrus and piny flavors that leave your tongue puckering from the bitterness. Flavor finishes with a mild caramel malt and yeasty ending. Body is moderate to heavy with a modest carbonation lends a very creamy feeling. A terrific brew overall! The melding of Belgian characteristics with a hoppy barley wine worked extremely well. As it warms, more of the Belgian esters and yeast come out in both the flavor and nose, making this beer sparkle with a sensory overload. A really, really good beer.

growler at RBWG, pours light brown with a medium off white head. Aroma is pine hop and lots of fruity yeast. This is a nice representation of Belgian yeast melding nicely with a hoppy BW. There are notes of pear and candied sugar with touches of plum in a very boozy finish.

Orange pour with tan head and lace. Citrus and yeasty aroma. Citrus hops and abv dominate an unusual flavor. Aggressive carbonation.

Appearance: Pours a dark amber with a beige creamy frothy film.

Aroma: Abbey Tripel like yeast and big and herbal hop notes.

Taste: Tripel yeast (pencil shavings and clove), fruitiness and abraisive bitter hops.

Mouthfeel: Thick and astringent.

Overall: I’ll take OG OG any day over this.
