COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Whether you are writing the correct year by now or not, it’s officially 2013. That means a new Stone Brewing Co. Odd Beer for Odd Years release. The first time around, Old Guardian was “Belgianized”. This year is a oak smoked edition. This beer makes uses of the same smoked malt used in recent collaboration The Perfect Crime.

I’m not normally a big barleywine fan, but apparently they are the perfect showcase for smoked malt - who knew?? This one seems less boozy than most barleywines, with a strong smokey flavor throughout. Hops are minimal. Caramel malt provides balance. Just great.

Bouteille 66cl de Ibrew2or3, thanks Dave. Anno 2013.

22oz bottle in a tulip. Pours amberish brown with a lacy, cream-colored head. Aroma of smoked malts, light oak notes, caramel and toffee and an almost candy-like sweetness from the malts, some light notes of alcohol, a hoppy bitterness that’s pronounced even though the beer has aged a lot, and some light dough notes. Smooth texture. A pretty good beer that balances the smoked malts well, but is a little too boozy for me.

Bottle. Pours red amber, small white head. Good lacing. Aroma is caramel, sweet malt, plums, cherries, sugar syrup, light oak smoke but not much. Taste is sweet caramel and apricot with toasted malt, syrup, prune, oak tannins, and booze. Nice.

Dark cloudy amber pour with a white-ish head. Aroma was slightly smokey with some caramel notes and grassy notes. Taste was sweet with a smokey flavor. Really glad I got to try this amazing stuff.

Deep amber color out of the bottle with a small ivory colored head. Sweet nose of melted caramel with hints of charred wood. This is a rich beer with lots of malt syrup, caramel, apricot and raisin notes. The oak presents as a subtle charred wood. The alcohol comes out as it warms.
