COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Whether you are writing the correct year by now or not, it’s officially 2013. That means a new Stone Brewing Co. Odd Beer for Odd Years release. The first time around, Old Guardian was “Belgianized”. This year is a oak smoked edition. This beer makes uses of the same smoked malt used in recent collaboration The Perfect Crime.

Bottle pours darker orange big white head. Smells tastes of malt caramel bitter hops. Some roasty smoke taste. Not that great I love org. But this one just has kind of an off taste. I would not get it again.

Draft pour in tulip from Sybarite Pig. Dark orange in color with a haziness. Solid head was off-white and the lacing was solid all the way through. Aroma of lightly smoked wood (kind of like a camp fire a mile away), malts or roasted malts, prunes. Taste was a little less smoky then I thought it would be but the finish lingers a smoked flavor. Also taste of resin, roasted malts, little spice. It did not seem like a 12% on the taste or finish.

Sample from a bomber. Aroma is meat. Cotto salami. Taste is campfire. Too much smoke to even distinguish the barleywine.

3/2/13. Whoa. The ratings are all over the map for this puppy. Let’s try my buds. Mostly clear amber red pour with a big beige/khaki head that seems to linger on that last half inch forever and laces a ton. Lots of smoked malt hits the nostrils first for sure. Salty bacon, etc., comes to mind, along with plenty of sweetness which makes it a bit like barbecue. Aside from maybe a touch of vanilla, I can’t say the oak screams at my nose. The flavor boasts bold smoke again, lots of smoke, bacon, etc., but with a bolder dose of woody oak, lots of sweetness and dark fruits, and a solid dose of alcohol. I’d be interested to try this in a year or so when the smoke and alcohol mellow. Not enough to buy another bottle, but just saying.

Tried to read the label, but then gave up. 22 oz bomber pours a hazy ruby with a sticky white head. Initial hit of smoke but like lox, fishy smoke. Then a big hit of nail polish remover. Also some malt sweetness hidden in the background. The oak lends a dryness to the finish, but not much else. Smoked fish and nail polish remover?

Poured reddish orange with a moderate two-finger head , nice retention and lacing. Caramel malts up front on the nose, with a strong assist from smoke and oak, then some citrus hops seemed to poke through. Barley flavors were distinguishable in the taste, balanced by the citrus, most notably grapefruit, hops flavors, and a bit of burnt fireplace log. Well carbonated, medium bodied, the alcohol is evident but not overpowering.

From bottle at Capital Beerfest, Sacramento. Pours dark brown with a thin tan head and a smoked malt aroma. there is a hearty fruit and dark molasses flavor with a dry bitter finish.

Bomber at Jerry’s. Dark, clear red-amber with big, flotsam, off-white head, and good legs / Sweet nose of spun sugar and smoke / Full body, sweet and syrupy, chewy, creamy, excellent balance and hop bite, and bitter, but hot, finish / Winey flavors of spun sugar, orange peel, smoke, salami, grapefruit, almond, and oak / Stone (again) uses smoke adeptly.

timfoolery (1124) - California, USA - MAR 2, 2013
Poured at Cap Brewfest. Aroma had smoke and oak, but the flavor ruined this for me. Sorta sour oak and the roast paired terribly. Another Stone, and I'm not impressed. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

22oz bottle. Poured a deep amber with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of wood, smoke, some meats, and citrus. Tastes of smoke, oak, caramel, and citrus. Lighter alcohol in the finish.
