Pours a deep honey brown with tints of red. Nice smoked aroma, which belies the bite waiting for one’s palate. Definitely an unmistakable barley-wine.

Draft courtesy of craftycarl21, thank you sir! Clear golden color, fluffy white head. Aroma of subtle smouldering straw and stone fruit. Taste is meaty with a softly burning edge, thick and heavy mouthfeel. Interesting, almost chewy.

The pour is a clear blood red color with a moderate, beige, pillowy head which settles to a thin, lasting, froth and leaves similar lace. The nose is predominantly the smoked malt note, very earthy, not overly smoked but masking the other notes; candied raisins, light cherry, molasses, perfumey, and slight citrus. The flavor still hides the malt and hop notes but seems a bit more balanced; candied fruits (raisins, apricots), slight toasty caramel, very oaky, very resinous, still similar smoke, and still very earthy. The palate is quite dry, medium to full, and soft to lively. The finish is mostly bitter with dry oak, resins and earth all over, and the smoke lingering. Not sure where to go with this one... Smoked beers are not really my thing but this one really wasn’t overly smoky; however, the smoke and oak notes really mask the base beer. Not that OG is even one of my favorite BW’s or Stone beers for that matter, but this one was fairly simple and straightforward for a 12% BW. Ehh.

Draft at sb. Pours a crystal clear medium amber with a dense and rocky tan head. Lots of lace. Sweet bacony nose, light peppery esters woven in. Creamy thick body, sluggish carb. Bacon, toast, and spicy notes on the mid palate. Long dryish finish. Interesting stuff.

22oz bottle, courtesy of the brewery. Thanks! Pours a deep, dark amber color with high clarity; modest light-tan head with patchy lacing. Lots of vanilla- and oak-laced smoke in the aroma; maybe even some cotton candy esters; the smoke is of the soft and pillowy sort, if a bit burnt around the edges. Medium-full body; moderate, fine-bubbled carbonation; with the bitterness and smoke combined, this is a bit assaultive of the palate; plenty of citrusy, juicy hops at the tip of the tongue, along with plenty of bubble gum, plump vanilla, and the soft wooden character of bright oak; a meaty, robust beer with plenty of heft in the mouth; quite nice, if the oak character is a bit too forward throughout. The mid-palate on is that emphatic smoked oak. Lasting finish of smoky vanillins and light char; some lingering hop bitterness as well.

Pours ruby red and clear, with a rough pour a good head and lacing. Aroma is initially smoke and oak then as it warms it takes on a cherry hint with grassy hops. Taste is bitter for a barleywine and follows arom in nuance. palate is a bit thin but not out of style. overall it’s an interesting experiment and I’d bet it ages well. but right now it’s a bit all over the place.

Pour out of 22 oz bottle, deep, clear ruby red pour with thin slightly off white head, aroma brought notes of smoke, hints of earth, caramel, toffee, slight oak tannins in there, touch of spicy yeast and phenolic notes from the yeast, hints of grass and grainy notes as well. Taste is a mix of dark fruits, oak, smoky bacon notes, caramel, sweet fruits, hints of spicy Belgian yeast notes with a touch of phenols, nice touch of earth, slight booze/warming, finishing very bitter, slightly dry, slightly sweet.

On tap. Dark amber red with a creamy off white head. Aroma of caramel, toffee, oak, smoke, and light vanilla. Tastes of caramel, molasses, and citrus up front followed by tastes of leather and tobacco and finishing with smoke and oak notes. Thick creamy full bodied palate. Nice.

22 ounce bottle purchased at The Davis Beer Shoppe. The aroma on this is really nice with a good amount of smoked maltiness. Light underlying vinousness, but the smoke dominates. Transparent orange-amber body with a strong, bubbly yellowish head that produces great lacing. Starts with a light malted caramel sweetness, before some smoke comes in pretty strongly in the middle Light vanilla oakiness is also present. Finishes with a warming, lightly herbal hopped, ethanol flavor. Pretty good stuff. Could probably use some time, and that might fade the smokiness, though.

22oa bomber of disapointment. Poured a rather good looking syrupy ruby brown body under a dense creamy light beige head. Aroma is way too smoky. Lots of campfire with some underlying caramel and molasses sweetness. The body is super smoky with a medium mouthfeel and average to stronger carbonation that finishes hot and dry. Flavor is all smoke with a touch of smoked fish and earth. Didn’t really like this one.
