COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Whether you are writing the correct year by now or not, it’s officially 2013. That means a new Stone Brewing Co. Odd Beer for Odd Years release. The first time around, Old Guardian was “Belgianized”. This year is a oak smoked edition. This beer makes uses of the same smoked malt used in recent collaboration The Perfect Crime.

Tried to read the label, but then gave up. 22 oz bomber pours a hazy ruby with a sticky white head. Initial hit of smoke but like lox, fishy smoke. Then a big hit of nail polish remover. Also some malt sweetness hidden in the background. The oak lends a dryness to the finish, but not much else. Smoked fish and nail polish remover?

Poured reddish orange with a moderate two-finger head , nice retention and lacing. Caramel malts up front on the nose, with a strong assist from smoke and oak, then some citrus hops seemed to poke through. Barley flavors were distinguishable in the taste, balanced by the citrus, most notably grapefruit, hops flavors, and a bit of burnt fireplace log. Well carbonated, medium bodied, the alcohol is evident but not overpowering.

Bomber at Jerry’s. Dark, clear red-amber with big, flotsam, off-white head, and good legs / Sweet nose of spun sugar and smoke / Full body, sweet and syrupy, chewy, creamy, excellent balance and hop bite, and bitter, but hot, finish / Winey flavors of spun sugar, orange peel, smoke, salami, grapefruit, almond, and oak / Stone (again) uses smoke adeptly.

Poured at Cap Brewfest. Aroma had smoke and oak, but the flavor ruined this for me. Sorta sour oak and the roast paired terribly. Another Stone, and I'm not impressed. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bomber from BevMo. Clear deep amber in color. Nose is malty and lightly sweet with a fair amount of smoke. Hops and and some alcohol up front. Some sweetness and smoke kind of come together. The finish is strong grapefruit peel bitterness, a touch of smoke and some alcohol. 11.4% ABV.

Bomber. A rich ruby red tinted copper body. There is a nice yellowish khaki head on top of this beaut. The nutty nose has smoked almonds with some notes of leather. There is also some sweet pear. This tastes like lightly smoked pears, caramel and pecans. The body is thick and chewy, it really coats the mouth. Smoke builds as you drink more of it. Sweetness and pine hides behind the smoke. A strange and decent beer.

Westmeister (1750) - Atlanta, Georgia, USA - FEB 24, 2013
Bottle. Pours dark red with smaller bubbly tan head. Smell is sweet caramel, fruity, smoke, oak. Taste is initially fruity caramel. Initially the known yet more subtle than I would have expected oak and smoke come in. Yet as it warms these come out stronger to campfire/meatiness. Then the hoppiness of the base Guardian really shines too. Very nice mix up, but still prefer the original. It’s a hard one to beat though.

[Bottle] Pours deep red with a small beige head. Aroma is big on smoke. There is also alcohol, and an underlying sweetness. Taste is also dominated by smoke, quite bitter, alcohol, some barley and jammy sweetness again. Balances nicely with the smoke as it warms. Thick mouthfeel, smooth, lingering bitterness--nice. Overall, a very solid beer. The smoke is a bit strong when first poured, but the balance after warming is very pleasant.
