Whether you are writing the correct year by now or not, it’s officially 2013. That means a new Stone Brewing Co. Odd Beer for Odd Years release. The first time around, Old Guardian was “Belgianized”. This year is a oak smoked edition. This beer makes uses of the same smoked malt used in recent collaboration The Perfect Crime.

Tap. Pours a dark amber/ruby color with a white, sticky head. Lots of lacing. Aroma was all smoke and bbq pit and nothing else. Where is the Old Guardian aroma? Taste started out with some sweetness and fruitiness then into smoke. I really enjoyed this part. Immediately following the smoke was a horrible bitter, chemical taste. I really enjoy regular Old Guardian but this was no good. This was good at first but as it warmed it became incredibly hard to finish. I’d be interested to see what a bottle tastes like and re-rate.

Not much aroma to speak of. Taste is nice full-bodied Belgian abbey style ale. Very thick, very sweet. Masks the intense strength.

This one is somewhat smokey on the nose, but just slightly. Pours a filtered amber with fleeting head. Taste is very malty with a good bit of sweetness that is cut by a subtle but present bitterness. The finish is slightly smokey and dry. Sort of expected more smokiness, but overall it’s a interesting pour.

22 bottle from CountyWide. Dark amber with chill haze, ring and lace. Smoke, vanilla, fresh bread and caramel aroma with a hint of alcohol. Mild fruity sweet caramel ripe plum with assertive bitter dry finish with some ashy smoke. Active carbo causes mild astringency in the finish. Will recede with age I think. Medium Full body. Excellent. Can’t believe it’s 12% (after all I’ve had already. Yikes). Bravo!

Dark reddish-brown pour with a tan head. Aroma is light smoke, sweetness, a little oak. Taste is smoked malt, mesquite even, little hot, sweet, some oakiness. Leaves smokey aftertaste. Will buy another to age. Good lacing.

Pours deep amber-tinged mahogany into a tulip. Off-white soapy head with good retention recedes leaving gloppy spiders. Sweet smoke and oak aromas. Thick with sweet caramel and oak upfront turning to smoke before the lasting bitter earth finish.

The smoke shines out in the beginning, and some aggressive hop bitterness at the end. Not very much like the Regular Old Guardian, and not as good, but I still like it.

draft at Blue Monk. toffee colored pour with small white head. medium bodied. smoky oakiness seems to dominate all BW aspects. toffee caramel richness gets lost in the oaky shuffle. could use aging perhaps

22 oz bottle. Pours hazy copper red with a big creamy light tan head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is a bit subdued - some peaty smoke with sweet caramel malts in the background.

The flavor is sweet caramel malts and dark fruits with a big bitter smoke finish. The alcohol is noticeable in the finish too. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation and is a bit watery.

Overall, the smoke is interesting, but the beer is a bit watery with a lot of harsh bitter alcohol.

Tallahassee, Fl - Market Square Liquors - 22 oz bomber. Pours a sparkling medium copper with a soft off-white head that leaves a light trail of lacing. Aroma has some smoked sausage notes, a touch of a freshly opened box of band-aids. Flavor has a nice meaty presence with some hints of sausage and beef jerky. Some prunes and dates twirl around in the back end, a slight touch of brandy. Thickish, belly warming mouthfeel. Pretty solid.
