COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Whether you are writing the correct year by now or not, it’s officially 2013. That means a new Stone Brewing Co. Odd Beer for Odd Years release. The first time around, Old Guardian was “Belgianized”. This year is a oak smoked edition. This beer makes uses of the same smoked malt used in recent collaboration The Perfect Crime.

22 oz - Lots Going on. Nose like smoked salmon, flavors the same way too. This is a busy palate.

Pretty decent for a barley wine, one of my less favorite styles. Nose is rich, a bit of bourbon, candied fruit, tons of vanilla. Appearance is quite nice, dark orange and clear, with a brilliant circling retention. Mouthfeel starts a little rough and overwhelming. Notes of smoke, oak, alcohol, carbonation, and sweetness all hit hard. FInishes dry and with that smokey wood thing, which does a nice job of quenching the barley sweetness. From One Stop.

Temps abruptly dropping into the 20s (it’s April!) so this felt right. 2/3/13 bomber into a snifter glass, hazy golden-hued orangy amber color, some yeast floaties, with off-white head. Aroma of huge caramel malt sweetness, faint smoke and light citrus hops. Taste brings out a lot more dimension; dark fruit (raisins, apricots), toffee, vanilla, wood char, grill smoke and strong piney hop bitterness (even after a year). Heavy body, low carbonation, soft, syrupy with smokey boozy finish. Still a hop hit after a year but better. Overall its aggressive and a little boozy, yet feels so nice on this cold evening. Not as good as regular Old Guardian but the smokey undertone is nice.

'13 bottle. The pour is a deep hazy orange brown. The aroma has a nice smoked and oak nose to it. The taste is big, the oak comes through for sure. Boozy for sure. Solid beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Decent AMerican-style barley wine with a mild smoke flavor and heavy bitterness. Somewhat schizophrenic with the sweet caramel and malt flavors living side by side with the resin-y bitterness without ever coming together. Hops upfront and lingering with an appearance by the dark caramel briefly in between.

Malty aroma with smoke flavors present. Taste is fairly sweet toffee and raisins with the smoke accent being apparent. Taste improves markedly with some warmth and the warmth also allows the alcohol to fade. Nice amber color, good head and lace, sediment present. Finish is somewhat bitter.

Pours a hazy, dark amber with a short tan head and lacing. It has a rich aroma of malt, resin, and some smoke and dark fruit. The flavor is chewy malt throughout with resin hops and a smoky background followed by a syrupy finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

[5217-20130412] 1pt6fL bottle. Oaky wood plastic aroma. Clear, golden amber body with a medium-lasting foamy off-white head. Smoky sweet wood malt flavour has a long bitter aftertaste. Medium-full body. Harsh, bitter, likeable. (7/4/6+/3/13) 3.3

On draught at Lucky Labrador for the 17th Annual Barleywine and Big Beer Festival. 2013 vintage. Dark amber color. Sweet oak barbeque, citrus hop, and caramel. Taste is campfire smoke, sweet BBQ, tart citrus hop, sweet malt. Finishes with a sweet campfire finish.

Bottle @ home. Pours clear amber, two finger white head with small bubbles. Sweet aroma of caramel, toffee, somewhat vinous raisins and a subtle and well balanced oak smoke note. Flavor is sweet of caramel, some toffee and quite a lot of smoke. Some vanilla. Aftertaste is drier of oak, dry figs, raisins, some ash, some higher alcohols and a diminishing caramel/toffee body. It is a bit edgy and will probably taste even better as it ages . It finishes with a long lasting big bitterness that has citrus, nut and wood character. Big mouth feel initially with low soft carbonation.

Smoke and carmelized brown sugar on the nose. Amber pour with an inch of light tan head. Light smoke up front, carmel, and malt. Mild smoke finish that hangs around without destroying your palate for the rest of the night.
