COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Whether you are writing the correct year by now or not, it’s officially 2013. That means a new Stone Brewing Co. Odd Beer for Odd Years release. The first time around, Old Guardian was “Belgianized”. This year is a oak smoked edition. This beer makes uses of the same smoked malt used in recent collaboration The Perfect Crime.

Bomber from Sam’s Quik Shop in Durham. Gotta love the $6.99 price tag. Pours a deep amber, clear with a big yellowish beige head, fading down to not much. Nose of vanilla, smoked wood chips, toffee, brown sugar. The smoke fades as it warms and I get used to it, and a more balance beer presents itself. Taste is sweet but not too sweet for a barleywine. A bit boozy and hot, but not all that much for 11.4%. Would have been fine with just 12 oz of this.

"A beautiful beer to look at. Cold, the smoke is nearly undetectable in the aroma, as is the usual hoppiness of the base beer. The smoke comes out as it warms, though it was present in the flavor right from the get go. I miss the hops but the malt carmel backbone of this huge beer combined with the smoke is really nice, as is the oak presence. Dare I say it’s a little harsh at room temp, but damn, it IS 11.4%. One of my favorite american smoked beers."

Fairly well-rounded beer. Oak, smoke and hops are the aroma. Cloudy brandy color with a thin head. It looks heavy. This was an older bottle so there was a decent amount of sediment. Medium weight palate with strong carbonation. Smooth. Big flavors as to be expected with most Stone products. Bitterness up front with a sweetness from toffee and oak. Smokiness was subtle and at the end. A big beer.

remember drinking this at freshcraft a while back, well not really remember, but i recall it on the menu, eating an awesome steak with a sherry peppercorn sauce...then something about brown bags... then something about leopold brothers... then something about somebody going in the wrong bathroom...then something about we have to leave and stating fuck y’all i did nothing wrong i’m going to sip a barleywinre and you drunk ass fucks get leave if you can’t behave. so not much about the beer- but i do recall my feet hurt after i woke up the next day and when i checked back a few days later they said our bill was paid and there were no hard feelings. So on to the beer. found this in a local bottle shop tonight. pour is a murky maroon. minimal yellow white head. smells faintly of smoke and a bit of vanilla and paint thinner. flavor is nice sweet with a lingering smoke. apricot, strawberry, brisket, and pine. that is a good combination somehow. the high alcohol is very evident with each sip and sniff. i like it. takes some of the candy note out of a fresh old guardian and dulls the hops just enough.

Tasted on 11/15/2013. Got 1 pint for $8.31. It had a red brown color. Like cinder bock, but with more of a bitter finish. Can taste the alcohol, the smoke isn’t overpowering.

Appearance: Clear ruby with finger thick beige head. Aroma: Resinous, citrus, slight woodiness, treacle/golden syrup, fruit cake. Taste: Medium sweet and bitterness with low sourness. Palate: Thick grainy texture and body, average carbonation, lingering fairly dry, bitter sweet, slightly smoky, treacle like, malty, fruit cake finish. Comments: Very good and lace.

65 cl bottle. Pours a beautiful amber with medium head. Bourbon, sultanas, vanilla and oak in aroma. Similar taste notes, perhaps some subtle hickory/smoke. Very nice! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at the Capital Ale House in Fredericksburg, VA. Opaque, near black with a tan head and excellent lacing. Aroma of caramel, strawberry jam, roasted malt, oak, black raspberry and mild smokiness. Taste of licorice, berries, caramel, roasted malt, dark fruit, charcoal, heirloom tomatoes, oak and more licorice at the finish. The alcohol is very well hidden. Medium/full body and medium/high carbonation. A nice, complex malty barleywine that borders on an imperial stout. Both the oak and the smoke come though smoothly without muddying the other flavors. On the other hand, the alcohol stays very well hidden. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Aroma of caramel malt oak smoke, reminds me of smoked meat. Dark bronze ample tan head. Taste is smooth combination of malt old hops and some faint smoke. The balance is incredible. Mouthfeel is velvety smooth. I unexpectedly find this top notch.
