A beautiful bold barley wine. Massive malt and hop notes. Silver Medal winner at the 2000 Great American Beer Festival in the Barley Wine category. Gold Medal winner at the 2002 World Beer Championships in the Barley Wine Category. Look for it in the first quarter of each new year. Can be cellared or enjoyed upon its release.

2004 release. This poured nicely. Good head with an amber/brown color that displayed just a bit of murkiness. Rich complex aroma of malts, hops and dark fried fruits. The palate was well balanced, with enough hops to differentiate this from an English Style Barleywine, yet not too over the top either. Sweetly complex flavor to match the aroma. This one is well done.

Just got the 2005 release, in a 22 oz. bottle. I was really impressed by the sweet bitterness of this brew. It went down nice and smooth, I might have to get another bottle of this before they sell out.

It seems hard to find a beer that can mix so much sweetness with so much hops but Stone pulls it off nicely. Thank you for another fine concoction.

22 oz bottle (winter 2005 release [11.26% abv], fresh): clear, glowing ruby-orange. A thin white head bunches at the edges of the glass. Thick, sweet malted caramel aroma laced generously with pine hops and fresh grapefruits, but lacking the freshness or hop intensity that I was expecting. Rose petals mix lightly with orange hops and sticky, bitter alcohol. A distinct resiny quality wraps this one together, perhaps this will get better with a little age, but it wasnít to special right now.

2005 bottle. Nice clear dark amber pour, smallish white head that quickly left. Aroma is somewhat light, but very nice indeed. Sweet caramel and candy apple tones, light hops in the background, woodsy notes, some alcohol. Flavor isnít nearly as interesting. Bitter hops and alcohol donít give way to much else. Some light caramel sweetness pops up as it warms. Heavy on the palate, very coat-sy, and not much else. Long bitter aftertaste

Bottle. There are few beers I have gone through as much trouble to get as this one. I called multiple Bevmo locations from my home state of MN prior to my trip out the SF Bay Area to find out who had this brew. San Mateo said they were going to get it, but their shipment didnít come in. Finally the Geary St. SF store said they had a few bottles, and since I was driving up to the City it worked out well. Iíll have to say I was a little disappointed. This is at least a notch below the SN Big Foot. Rich, smoky aroma, not overly strong, with molasses notes. Clear body, deep amber, no visible carbonation, no head, but very nice lace. Very strong flavor. There is no question this is a barley wine. Peppery. Not sweet enough, however. Good, but I found myself wondering why I went through such an effort. I bought 3 bottles, so perhaps Iíll cellar one and see what its like in a couple of years.

2005 Bottle thanks to JohnC. Pale orange brew with a stinging alcoholic nose. Hops and alcohol are pretty much all this has going for it. Hopefully a few years will mellow it.

2004 bottle (aged 1 year) from whitesideís in Corvallis. I split a 22oz with my friend. Pours orangy-amber with a 1-2cm white head. Smells sweet with caramel and alcohol. Taste is fruity, with a nice bitter finish that lasts. It has a nice thick mouthfeel. iíll definitely drink this again

2005.Beautiful Dark amber. Aroma is of sweet malts and alcohol. Definitly a full flavored and rather hoppy barley wine. It has the usual thick sweet malty flavor with the expected Stone hop bite and a very noticable alochol presense. I enjoyed this. Had an expected robust Stone flavor.

2004 Vintage-I donít think Iíve given many 10ís for flavor before, but this beer hit it for me. Just a nice, well hopped b-wine. I wish I had a few more to age and see how it matures. Next time Iíll buy a case. One of the best beers Stone makes.
