This is really how I enjoy my Barely Wines... fresh and hoppy with the huge barley presence. pours a deep red with a quarter inch white head. good hop filled aroma. big presence over the palate with a bunch of spice and bitterness on the front. some caramel and alcohol lingering. excellent bitter finish.
’08 bomber on 4/5/08 - rating from notes taken. very well balanced American Barley Wine.... pours a deep red with a white head. sweet, hoppy, medium body and a thick hoppy finish. Didn’t really taste the alcohol at all.... doesn’t drink like an 11+%. yesyouam (587), Fairport, New York, USA Apr 15, 2008 Stone Old Guardian (Early 2008) is a crystal clear, sparkling, viscous, red-orange-brown ale with a frothy light beige head with oily bubbles. The head has an eggy consistency and leaves great lacing. The aroma holds a deep, round sweetness. There are grassy, herbal, medicinal, cough drop elements in the aroma. It has a smooth full body with a crispy finish. It’s a touch gritty and sharp at the end. It has good flavor balance. It’s very bitter like lime and orange peel. It is sweet and boozy like candy. It has a hot rumble at the finish. A great barleywine! Age it! SuperDave70 (1157), Beautiful Sunny Mesa, Arizona, USA Apr 15, 2008 Pours a hazy copper with a big foamy off whit head. Nice aroma of fruit, malt, hops and caramel. Sweet flavor, with malt, fruit and caramel dominating, and the hops really coming out in the finish. Very nice. tgncc (796), Bellmore, New York, USA Apr 11, 2008 Updated: Apr 24, 2009Rerate, growler. Beautiful aroma, very sweet, fruity, like raisins, malty, with a quite a bit of citrus hops. Attractive appearance, a nice hazy orange/copper color, with an off-white head that lingers slightly. The flavor is surprising, it has an astringent quality I didn’t expect given the aroma (somewhat like Bklyn Monster Ale.) It is mainly grapefruit, sweet ripe fruits, malty. I’m surprised by a lack of alcohol in the flavor as well, given its ABV. Thick syrupy mouthfeel. The palate is almost pure bittering hops, grapefruit. Complex and enjoyable, a great barley wine. robinvboyer (1419), Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, Canada Apr 10, 2008 bomber from the cheese man!
2006 edition.
Murky brown pour with a very small off white head. Aroma is BIG on sweet malt, and some nice hops, and a touch of fruit. Wow, this smells so much of a big glass of caramel. Flavour is very smooth, some big matly notes, the hops come through in the finish, they leave that high alpha soapiness in my mouth, with a touch of pine. Finish is nice and bitter, but not too bitter, they hops are present enough, and do they job beautifully, and the malt is the star, it leavs a wonderful sweet/caramel maltiness, and adds a bit of a brandy like sweetness. Excellent barley wine, i enjoy its not a hop monster like many other american barley wines i’ve had. rodneykm (109), Westminster, South Carolina, USA Apr 10, 2008 Fruit taste with a bit of a sour finish. Nice amount of alchie. Can’t wait to have another fg8080 (37), San Diego, California, USA Apr 9, 2008 Barley wine style ale. Pours copper in color with an off white, yellowish dissapearing head, smells sweet like berry or fruit with madness of barley. Loved it, drink two or three and youll probably never wake up.
