f351c4v (404), Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 15, 2007 Pours a clear amber color with a fluffy white head. Slightly boozy aroma, a hint of fruit, and some sweet grains. Begins as a big, sweet rush, malty. Evens out in the end, dry and bitter in the finish. Thick, sticky mouthfeel. Not bad. Svesse (2601), Hässelby, Sweden Sep 15, 2007 (Bottle, Akkurat, Stockholm 14 Sep 2007) Amber colour with brief off-white head. Fruity nose with peaches, mandarin, orange and generous amounts of rubbery hops. Fruity taste with notes of orange, mandarin and loads of rubbery, floral hops in the finish. Slightly vinous, sweet with hints of marzipan. Massive, chewy beer, but still with balance. Magnificent! jhumphries69 (718), Tyrone, Georgia, USA Sep 14, 2007 22oz bomber. Pours a very deep orange with hints of cloudiness and haze. It pours with a very thick, light tan head that slowly fades to nearly nothing and leaves a lovely web of lace all over the glass. The aroma is nice and very strong: lots of alcohol, but also lots of fruit and sugar: sweet malts, vinous and plump fruits, and a nice touch of citrus. The flavor starts sweet and strong with alcohol. It has a nice touch of fruity bitterness along with big, sweet chunks of caramel cake. The middle of the tongue picks up the burning sensation of alcohol, more caramel malt and a nice touch of bitter hops. The finish burns the back of the throat with alcohol, but is awesomely balanced - firm malt presence balanced by just the right touch of bitterness. The mouthfeel is thick and is decently carbonated (not too much, not too little). The alcohol provides some sting all over the tongue. Overall, this is one of my favorite American Barley Wines - probably even better than Avery’s Hog Heaven (which may have been my favorite ABW before tasting this one). Truly tasty. Alldaydrinker (558), Norwood, Massachusetts, USA Sep 14, 2007 Poured into a snifter with a hazy ruby-amber colour with small creamy offwhite head. Aroma of the abv, very nutty (more almonds than anything), and hints of dark fruits. Initial taste is very sweet malts. Finishing with bitter hops and hints of dark chocolate. Delightful palate duration. Dry finish that leaves you parched and ready for more. Minor ring of head retention and no lacing of the glass. emerica56 (575), Bristol, Rhode Island, USA Sep 14, 2007 This beer pours a head with massive bubbles and a nice sweet smell that can be smelled from a distance it also has a cloudy amber color. It has a sweet smell of raisians and toffee malt with some earthy tones. As you drink it you can taste roasted malt with some hints of fruit and a mild woody flavor. The alcohol is not masked very well in this beer. There is a very strong sweet like brown sugar on the back of the palate that stays there for a while. beerme420 (50), Corona, California, USA Sep 11, 2007 beautiful amber red color. Creamy white head with bitter taste. taste of fruit and alcohol. pet3rman (206), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 6, 2007 22 oz Bomber: Early 07 Release: Pours Dark Amber with a big off white head. Aroma of fruit and booze. Taste is that of fruit and alcohol. Pretty complex but most masked by bitterness. Decent, not what I expected from a barleywine. kmweaver (2398), Sebastopol, California, USA Sep 5, 2007 22oz bottle, Winter 2004. Pours a hazy, ruby-amber color; off-white head with good retention and patchy lacing. Dense, dried red fruits and slightly warming alcohol in the aroma. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: dense, dried red fruits (much redder fruit than the 2003), warming toasty vanilla and alcohol; caramel, nougat, and alcohol; slightly hotter than the 2003 version. Lengthy, red fruit and caramel finish.
