’09 vintage. Cloudy copper with wispy white head. Aroma is sweet toffee and piney/floral notes. Very full flavors, sweet , still plenty of hop bitters. A little of the smokey, old malt character these can aquire with enough age. I think it could use a few more years. It has the strength and hops to stand up to the wait.

Sampled at CBC 2016 - second day. Deep caramel pour with a thin beige head. Tons of hops in this barley wine, making it quite delicious. Notes of caramel, grapefruit, pine resin.

2016 vintage on tap at Brewski 140516. This is a beer that is all about the hops and malt. Looks very good in the glass with an inviting toffee colour and an aroma that drags you in. You immediately get the sense from the very first sip that this beer will bite you if you mess with it - best to sip and savour.

Big bottle consumed in bowling spring session finale. Pours an attractive copper/almost amber color. Full finger of head...off white. Caramel and toffee aroma with elements of peat and bourbon. Taste is malty and biscuity with the caramel, toffee, and burnt sugars. Alcohol presence felt and grows with further consumption. The hoppy bitterness waits until the end to come into play. Oily and resiny mouthfeel. The galaxy can feel comfortable drinking this one.

Super great and sweet pour with rich caramel, oat, malt, yeast, and sugar textures. The nose was balanced with hops as well as candied sweetness with an earthiness.

Pours a hazy reddish brown. Aromas of hops, caramel malts, kind of medicinal. Flavor is to strong for me, big alcohol taste, malty with a citrus taste.

Deep reddish brown, very clear, small tan head. Vanilla, molasses, caramel. A some of pine resin. Bitter, some sweetness. Quite upfront alcohol, oily, acidity. Longish finish. Good.

660ml 2013 Classic Release Bottle from Coppers, Newcastle. Hazy copper coloured with a rich orange marmalade and burnt toffee flavour followed by a spicy, earthy bitter pineapple and pine finish. Superb!

This is a very difficult beer to rate, since they keep changing the recipe year to year. I felt the last vintage I had tasted like ass, but this Pekko Hops version 2016 is the bomb.

Leave it to Stone to craft one of the most aggressive and unapologetically West Coast style Barleywines I’ve ever tried. To be fair, there is a decent amount of caramel malt in here, but the hops are the main smelling/tasting point. Piney resin and orange (peel and juice) all the way through. Feel is creamy and the hops elevate the large malt bill to keep it from becoming heavy. I’ll need to have some of the other variants. You know, strictly for scientific purposes.
