3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
This is a fresh bottle of 2012 old Guardian reviewed fresh.
Poured into the very cool stone old guardian snifter a nice bright and clean copper with a thick and long lasting tan head, some light lacing and good head retention.
The smell is light and bready, with a bit of sweet toffee and some light herbal and medicinal hop notes.
While the nose seems to be more malt focused, the flavor is definitly hop centric, waves of big piney bitterness wash over my tongue all but drowning out the light underpinnings of brown sugar and caramel. Big lingering bitterness with a heavy pine last long after each sip. Just a touch of sweetness and sourdough manage to sneak through the hop assault a bit after it warms.
Very thick and resiny, leaving an oily hop coating on my tongue.
This is a solid west coast style hop bomb barleywine, a bit one dimensional, and by the time you finish a bomber of this it starts to get monotonous.

My first favorite barleywine style ale. Strong but not harsh, sweet honey flavor, and nice malt backbone.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Rating #1289 - 21.10.2014 - Stone launch @Craftbeeryeg. Draught. Hazy orange-brown pour, bubbly head, not much lacing. Aroma is hot, alcohol, pastry dough, burnt sugar, orange rind. Taste is an alcoholic hoppy punch, lots of IBUs tempered with sweetness, and a ton of alcohol on the palate, but not thoroughly undisguised. Would love to try a 2-3 year aged.

Bottle aged from 2014. Still a good bit of carbonation on the pour. Sweet tropical fruit on the nose as well as on the palate. Truly delicious. I hadn’t been anticipating this year’s release but I am now.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Big heavy and so tightly stuffed but difficult to see all the individual elements. Dark brown, boozy and long on the palate. Needs more definition. Not bad.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle from CBB. Ruby amber with an off-white head. Sweet malty aroma. Starts as malty as the aroma but has a hint of hops at the end to stop it being too cloying.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Notas dulces, malta, granos.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle at home. 3 year old. Has a slightly hazy deep reddish orange color with a small ivory head. Lots of hops in the aroma with apricot, ammonia, caramel, oak and alcohol. The flavor has a lot of caramel along with sweet biscuit, grassy hops, harpix, ammonia and dried fruit. Full-bodied, soft mouth feel, and has a medium bitterness. A rich, hoppy and well balance American barley wine. The hops area surprisingly present after three years.
