2012 release.
Appearance: The body is hazy with an amber hue, slight brown color, only a very thin tan head that has poor retention.
Aroma: The aroma is sweet with caramel and toffee with fruity aromas, some grape and musky raisins.
Taste: The flavor is less malty than expected from the aroma, there’s a sweet caramel backing with some toasted malts, some floral and lightly fruity hops on the finish with lots of raisin flavor.
Palate: Medium to thick bodied, light to medium carbonation.
Overall: This is a solid barleywine, but I am just not a huge fan. This is available at a great price point though so it’s worth buying to try and possibly age a while.

2012 release bottle, ALEhouse, Riga
Poured dark ambery or brownish, quite clear with beige small but thick and long lasting thin layer top. Leaving slowly lasing, stripe after stripe, deep bubbly visual texture,hence- above average carbonation. Aroma- hmm, so intense and pleasant, rich and long lasting- sweet caramel and biscuit malty, a bit berries-candies alike, hints of nuts, toasted malts and quite yeasty seemed to me too. Suplemented richfull by hops but unfortunately I couldn’t figure out what kind of, cause it is so richfull of aromas. Taste- massively sweet and hoppy, can’t say that it was too bitter but maybe it’s just perfectly balanced out by sweet flavors. Aftertaste is spruce, resiny alike hoppy, long lasting, light to medium dry finishing. Medium to full body, thick, stewy, pulpy texture, for BW it was surprisingly carbonated, not too much, just to fizz on your tongue, astringent mouthfeel. Indeed beer to try. will compare with 2013 classic release.

Poured from a bomber into a Stone Brewery Snifter a dark amber with a tan head. Aroma is sweet caramelized pine needles. Flavor is sugared hops malty biting-deliciously balanced on the palate . LOVE this American style barleywine. Have past 4 years laying down. One day will have an epic vertical celebration.

Keg at Brewdog, at 11%. Dark orange, hazy, decent foamy white head. Aroma is strong sweet caramel, rose and other floral notes, pine, alcohol. Body is medium, rich, foamy, low carbonation. Taste is sweet toffee apple. Very sweet - one dimensionally so - but not to the extent that it becomes unbearable. Piney hop is almost obscured by the sweetness. Alcohol is well hidden. Pretty good actually.

Biscuity, rich malty, sticky, but not sweet, soapy hop feel with a spicy touch. Very mellowed out and drawn out taste with a peak in the end with a soapy hop bitterness and drawn out bitterness. Quite dry for a barley wine, some apricot and plum fruit to it.

This is a fantastic barleywine; aroma of caramel and pine, malt forward taste with a hoppy, bitter finish.

Pours a dark red with creamy head about a finger thick. Smells of tropical fruits, caramel and some barley. Really inviting. Tastes of mango, bananas barley and some hops come in the background to finish things off. Alcohol is noticeable a bit, but not overpowering. A fantastic barleywine. Hope to score some more in the future.
